As usual, there is a batter on a pace to shatter the doubles record, with Joey Votto scheduled to hit 81 (the record is a mere 67). David Ortiz and Ryan Sweeney are just one behind Votto, also on a pace to top 67 by a wide margin. It never happens.

Kemp and Ethier are on a pace to drive in 318 runs between them.

David Robertson is on a pace to pitch 72 consecutive scoreless innings this season. His streak is now at 13.

Since assuming Rivera's closer role, Robertson has 2 innings pitched with 5 K's.

Now that I've jinxed Robertson in a royal fashion, I'll try to do the same to Hamilton who now has an impressive lead in each Triple Crown category.

Meanwhile, four AL East teams are on a pace to win 90 or more games.

The Mets--yes, the team everyone loves to look down their noses at--are currently on a pace to win 94 games. (Do I think that will happen? I refuse to answer on the grounds that I might incriminate myself...but that doesn't change the fact that they're on that pace).

Carlos Beltran has already missed 8 games (with zero or 1 PA), and is still on a pace for 51 HRs and 138 RBIs --- neither of which Albert Pujols has ever done.

The worst start I can find by any player on a pace for ignominy, is Bill Wight, a fairly decent pitcher who won 77 games in a 12-year career.

Wight started the 1956 season in the Orioles starting rotation, and in his first start at Boston, he gave up a walk and five singles in the first inning, retiring only one batter, hitting the showers with a 108.00 ERA. It could have been worse, but his reliever stranded two of his runners. After four days of rest, he got his next start against Washington, and failed to retire a single batter. All four men he faced came around to score, blooming his ERA to 216.00.

His ERA had no place to go but down and he was much more effective in his third start, making it all the way to the third inning before leaving, trailing 5-1. But it reduced his ERA to a stingy 39.00 after three starts. Then he got his act together, and compiled a 3.08 ERA for the remainder of the season, in which he pitched seven complete games.

Today while perusing the pre-steroid record books, I noticed that Josh Hamilton is 15 games ahead of Maris's 1961 homerun pace. Maris had only 12 at the end of May.
