The Cardinals bullpen is on a pace to blow 30 save opportunities. At that rate, in order to win the division, they would likely need to have a late-game lead about 130 times. Or could win 130 games if they had even a halfassed closer. And would now be 18-6. Tonight, they actually recorded a save, with a 6-0 lead in the 8th, with the bullpen only allowing 5 runs to score..

Vlad tacked on amother four walkless plate appearances last night, going one for four, his one being a single which plated the go ahead winning run in the 8th.

So, 91 plate appearances this season without a base on balls, 103 consecutive when 2010 is included.

Coco Crisp is now up to 92 plate appearance with still the one walk, and while Robinson Cano won yesterday's game for NY with a three run first inning homerun, he also didn't walk, so he is at 88 plate appearances and a single free pass.

This is shaping up to be an epic three way battle as these titans compete for ....what since filihok's confirmation of the Hacker of the Modern Era is...the Rob Picciolo Award.

Game still in progress as I'm typing, but Vlad has tacked on two more walkless pa's so far today.

By the way, as impressive as Guerrero has been, he is still not half way to the record for the most consecutive plate appearances without a walk to start a season. That record is held by....who else....Rob Picciolo.
The top five:
Rob Picciolo, 1980, 84 games, 259 at-bats.
Mariano Duncan, 1995, 61 games, 213 at-bats.*
Kim Batiste, 1994, 53 games, 179 at-bats.
Kevin Jordan, 1997, 79 games, 164 at-bats.
Steve Garvey, 1973, 61 games, 162 at-bats.

The all time record within a season is 279 plate appearances, set by Hal Lanier of the Giants, one of the game's truly feeble offensive players. Three straight years ,1967, 1968 and 1969, he ranked last among NL qualifiers in average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.

That leaves Coco Crisp alone in 2nd place behind Guerrero in lowest walk percentage this year.

Crisp has 1 walk in 92 times at the plate.

Cano walked twice last night and is in danger of being booted out of this thread.

Walking twice in a game puts him on a pace to set a record for MOST walks in a season---324.

If Berkman gets 2 hits today (or doesn't play), the Cards will have, on the first of May, two hitters batting over .400 and on a 100-RBI pace. I wonder how many times teammates have done that. And Pujols ain't even one of them.

By the way, the top four NL hitters are all current or ex-Cardinals, and batting .388+.

Cano may have slipped, but Vlad marches on...five more walkless (and hitless) plate appearances for him last night. 100 plate appearances in 2011...zero walks. 112 consecutive walkless pa's going back to 2010.

Coco did not play, he has been having left quad problems, but is not expected to be placed on the DL.
