Default What do you think of Chief Wahoo: offensive or not?

Do you think Chief Wahoo needs to go or be redesigned? How does it reflect on the Indians for you? Do you have a negative view of the team because of our mascot?

Dumb relic of a less sensitive age.

You know how we know whether or not these names are good or bad? Because no one is using them any longer save those teams which already had them. No new team is going to be called anything which might be interpreted as insulting to some group, if someone tried there would be a huge stink and the team would be killing itself with bad pr before it had even played a game. How about a team called "The Bishops" with a mascot in a tall pointy hat and vestments who runs around on the field squirting people with his "Holy Water" pistol?

So...if nicknames and mascots like Wahoo are taboo for future teams, it establishes that there was something wrong with them all along. Yet we continue to tolerate them on sort of a grandfather clause basis.

I'm offended that about half of our states have Indian names, and I think all states (and cities and rivers) with names that have Indian language origins should have to change their names. Especially Indiana. It's disgusting and degrading and insulting and it makes me ashamed of my insensitive country.

Good. But from a practical point of view, you should probably narrow your focus if you wish to accomplish anything.

OK, we'll start by anglicizing Kansas City, Missouri to "People of the South Wind City, People with Wooden Canoes". No, wait---we'd still be naming the city and state after "those people", which is still de***rating.

I thought of Chief Wahoo as more silly than offensive. Then again, I've never been a believer in mascots for professional sports teams. (Is someone trying to tell me that fans wouldn't root for their team without a mascot to lead them on? I must have missed that memo).

I like him. I always thought he was a friendly guy who was particularly happy about being associated with a Major League baseball team, certainly not just a "grinning savage" as I've heard him described. He always made me think positive thoughts about American Indians. I'm sorry that some people are offended by him, and I can't say that they are wrong to feel that way, but I like him and my small portion of Indian heritage (1/32 Osage) is not offended by him.

If my team were called the Cherokees I would be flattered because of the name recognition.

Yes... but only because it will be offensive to SOMEONE.
