The Boston Red Sox traded 3B/1B Kevin Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox for IF/OF Brent Lillibridge and pitcher Zach Stewart.

Well all know that Youk has been in decline and Middlebrooks has been BABIPing it up in Youk's absence. The Sox have decided to go with Middlebrooks full time.

We can question this decision, ZiPS projects Youk for 1.5 WAR for the rest of the season and Middlebrooks for 1 WAR, but we cannot question that the Red Sox made the right move in acquiring noted Yankee-Slayer Brent Lillibridge.

Youkilis isn't having a great year, but he almost has to be an improvement on what the Pale Hose have been running out at 3rd. Thus far, they have combined to hit .253/.238 (OBP/SLG) 67% worse than the league average.

A struggling Youk has hit .315/.377 14% worse than average.

If Youk continues to suck, he's still a hell of a lot better than Brent Morel, O-Dawg and Eduardo Escobar

Dodgers sign international free agent Yasiel Puig for 6 years and $42 million. Puig is a 21 year old outfielder from Cuba.

The obvious comparison will be Yoenis Cespedes. Let's compare:

Cespedes: .424/.667 OBP & SLG, 1.2 K/BB ratio
Puig: .430/.581 OBP & SLG 1.3 K/BB ratio

Similar players. Cespedes has the bigger power but is 6 years older and in his power prime. Puig is said to have outstanding speed.

A couple of business related notes on the signing.
1) Looks like LA's new owners aren't afraid to open up the pocketbook. They've spent $120 million on outfielders in just a few months.
2) The new CBA will penalize teams for signing international free agents starting July 2nd. It will behoove the Dodgers to get this deal done before then.

Dodgers and Astros nearing a deal for Carlos Lee.

Dodgers fall to Mets, 5-0, and James Loney's playing time is up in air - latimes.com
Quote:
as part of the no-trade provision in his contract, Lee can veto trades to 14 teams. The Dodgers are on that list.

"I'll probably by tomorrow let you know because I don't want to go through this," Lee told the Houston Chronicle.
I won't mind if Lee denies the trade.

First, I'm scared ****less about what Ned will give up

Second, though Lee is a pretty good upgrade over Loney/Rivera
Loney/Rivera: .301/.335 (OBP/SLG) 32% worse than league average
Carlos Lee: .337/.405 (OBP/SLG) 3% better than league average

I just don't think the Dodgers have the horses to win the NL West.

the Astros would have received just one minor leaguer from the Dodgers. One name in play was right-handed pitching prospect Garrett Gould

I wonder if the Braves have Band-Aid as a new sponsor as well?

A week into his White Sox career, Kevin Youkilis isn't flashing the lumber.....231 .259 .269 so far in 26 at bats..and for the greek God of Walks, he still awaits his first free pass since trading his red socks for white ones.

Excellent reverse jinx.

Youk 3 for 6 with a home run, 3 runs scored and 4 RBI yesterday. No walks though.
