THE BOOK--Playing The Percentages In Baseball

Quote:
Top 3 rookie pitchers, according to BBWAA:
#1: Jeremy Hellickson (2.95 ERA, well-ahead of the other two)
#2: Ivan Nova (16-4, well-ahead of the other two)
#3: Michael Pineda (76 OPS+, 3.42 FIP, well-ahead of the other two)
It appears that the voters preferred ERA and WINS to more advanced metrics.

Relatedly, this looks good for a 2011 CY Young for Clayton Kershaw who lead the NL in ERA and wins, but finished behind Halladay in FIP.

I believe that Kershaw will be awarded the honor. He won the pitching triple crown...wins, ERA and strikeouts. He also edges Halladay in WAR, 7.6 to 7.3..according to Baseball Reference.

And finally there is the Oscar mentality of the voters, as in reasoning that there is so little to distinguish Halladay as better than Kershaw, and Halladay has already been honored while Kershaw has not....ergo, it is Kershaw's "turn."

All of that should easily trump FIP metrics in the minds of the voters.

I looked at it every way I could and I couldn't find a way to pick Kershaw over Halladay. Certainly they are 1A and 1B with Lee #3.

I suspect that the voters will overcome that difficulty.

Pitchers who have won the pitching triple crown have received 309 of a possible 312 first place votes.
