Does anyone know the reason why carmona lied to get he visa, presumably it was because he would have been denied otherwise. Was he some kind of criminal?
I wonder how widespread this practice of false identity and fudging on age is ???
There is great pressure in the Caribbean countries for prospects to impress scouts----by obtaining false identification to show that they are three years or so younger than they really, they feel they are enhancing their signablilty and bonus potential.
The Miami Marlins have had the recent case of their reliever Nunez who was using a false Id for years and he was discovered to be several years older than he listed his age at.
I would have to guess there are probably a couple of more of these cases out there right now. With the financial desparation and poverty that these kids face, it is understandable that these things might happen. That doesnt make it right at all-----maybe mlb and the repsective countries can come up with an improved data base and system to avoid these messes.

A 16 year-old who's 6'2" and can throw 90mph with a couple breaking balls is more of a prospect than if that same player was 19.
Can't post the link from my phone but hardballtalk has an article saying that Fausto Carmona was paying the real Fausto Carmona for use of his identity. When the fake Fausto Carmona asked for an increase in payments after the real Fausto Carmona's $7 million option was exercised the real Fausto Carmona refused. The real Fausto Carmona took to the airwaves in the Dominican and spilled the beans leading to the fake Fausto Carmona's arrest.

Good point, we only know of the ones who get caught. I was highly suspicious of Fernando Valenzuela. He was supposed to be 19 years old when he made his debut in 1980...and he sure didn't look like a 19 year old, nor perform like one. He was washed up and out of baseball at age 36, but was he actually 36?

This type of development could put a strain on the two parties business arrangement, if not lead to a complete break altogether.
Roberto "Fausto Carmona" Hernandez is back in the big leagues.
