Fausto Carmona actually someone else
Indians pitcher Fausto Carmona is apparently really Roberto Heredia, is three years older than he claimed to be, and is under arrest in the Dominican Republic.
I wonder if the Indians will cancel his $7 million option for 2012 if he is delayed in returning to the US.
Indians' Carmona arrested for false identity (http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/indians-pitcher-carmona-arrested-in-identity-case/article_7a579663-55c0-59d2-bf2f-cb1698bc7787.html - broken link)

This would have been even better if his real name had turned out to be Leo Nunez.

Heh - yep.
BTW, ol' Juan Carlos Oviedo received a $6M contract and will be the primary setup man for Heath Bell ....... that should help him be any name he wants........
On a more serious note, I would expect a lot more of these ........ when Nunez/Oviedo had his issues pop up he was working with the DR police to provide information and crack down on the agents/criminals who are doing the document work, etc
As the police infiltrate and crack those circles there will be more names that pop up and more guys who get a surprise when they show up to renew a false visa

In theory they could cancel his entire contract and sue to recover what they have paid him since he signed under false pretenses.
I suspect that this will not happen.

Ugh, tough blow for my Tribe. We were looking forward to seeing if he could return to his Ace status from 2007. He showed some positive signs last season and the Indians are moving in the right track. I have no idea what's going to happen with this situation.

As a Tribe fan, I'm right there with ya. I am hoping (if the chips should all fall into place) to have a decent rotation. "Carmona" is probably the worst person to not have his head on straight. Who knows how this will affect him or how it pans out for the season.

I have a feeling the Carmona/Heredia situation triggered the Slowey trade.
The Indians traded a pretty well regarded relief prospect for Slowey, and I don't think they would have pulled off this deal if they knew Carmona/Heredia was a rotation certainty.

That's why I posted it in this thread, not the Hot Stove thread.

Carmona may not be allowed back in the USA. He did commit a crime. Athletes should not be treated differently than any other person that does the same.
