Manny Ramirez agrees to deal with Oakland A's - ESPN

Quote:
Manny Ramirez told ESPN's Pedro Gomez on Monday that he has agreed to a deal with the Oakland Athletics.

Sources tell Gomez the deal is worth about $500,000. Ramirez is obligated to serve a 50-game suspension without pay before beginning play for the A's due to violating baseball's drug policy for the second time. With no rainouts, the first game Ramirez would be eligible to play is June 2 at Kansas City.
I interpret this as a box office move rather than a baseball move. Even if Ramirez has a great four months in Oakland, so what? He could be the difference between 70 wins and 73 wins, but Ramirez alone cannot push what appears to be a really bad club into contention.

What he does do is add a marquee name to lineup devoid of any stars. He also serves to fuel fantasies for A's fans....Maybe if Yoenis Cespedes turns out to be great, and maybe if the next generation of young pitching talent comes through strongly, and maybe Melkey has another career year like '11 and maybe if Jemile Weeks steps up to Joe Morgan level at second and maybe Coco breaks out with a supoerstar season ....and maybe there are some airplanes crashes involving the Angels and Rangers teams...

If Ramirez can no longer hit, it will cost the A's a half million at most, perhaps less if he does something to get himself suspended after his return from the suspension he has yet to serve.

The article stated that 500 K was to be his salary, but I wonder if that is 500 k for the season, minus his pay for the 50 day suspension, or it is 500 k for the season which begins in June for Ramirerz.

So, the A's go into 2012 with their highest paid player being a fellow who has never played professional ball at any level...and Manny.

Another triumph of marketing!

Oh, wait...it's supposed to be about baseball.
