Would you be so kind as to explain how refusing to participate in "God Bless America" is disrespecting the country? As has already been observed, it's not even our national anthem.

that's ok ...... the song means so much to him on an individual level he's willing to start a fight and disrupt the whole thing, immediately making it about him

now that's America!

I imagine that you would be arrested and charged with assault and battery if you did, as well as making yourself subject to a civil suit for damages. "He was disrepecting an Irving Berlin song" isn't going to be a viable defense for you.

The reason it would not of course is that no one is under any sort of legal obligation to participate in the singing of "God Bless America" at a ballpark. If in the 7th inning of a game there was a stadium wide singalong of some song which expressed concepts to which you did not subscribe, say John Lennon's "Imagine", would you feel obligated to participate? If someone assaulted you because you did not, would you view that as you getting what you deserved?

How would that situation be any different from the one you have described which would generate your thuggish response?

Allowing someone to express ideas that you may not agree with is much more respectful to America than smacking someone in the head over religious differences.

Perhaps instead of singing "God Bless America," everyone in attendance could smack the person seated next to them over the head for some perceived transgression (it could be political, religious, sports oriented--say, the person was wearing a cap from the opposing team--or any other reason).
