This is not valid, the exceptions are legion. Muhammad Ali retired and came back three times, Roger Clemens retired twice, and came back twice, and each time there was a prolonged tease "will he or won't he" aspect. Brett Favre had his golden farewell tour season and then came back and played for the Vikings. Andy Pettite retired for a year and then came back. And I lost complete track of the serial retirements and comebacks by Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran.

So, you need a new theory.
