Harvey has been very impressive, stays poised when runners get into scoring position, errors are made, etc.

Will it tire him to pinch hit when not pitching? His hits have been crisp.

This has turned into yet one more season where the real killer has been a lack of depth. Once the number of injuries started to mount, everything went down the tubes. I hope this won't be a winter of speculation about what starters the Mets should be looking for. 2013 will be a much better year if the bench is strong.

I agree. For one thing, we need a 4th OF who was the level of say, Angel Pagan, when he first came back to NY, and Beltran was healthy. Similarly, we need a player to fill a role like the Braves Prado did for a few years before becoming a starter. Multiple positions, solid D at all, good OBP, great sense at the plate.

And the Mets need to figure out who will be their catcher of the future. Hint: He is NOT on this roster, I hope.

I'm not worried about pitching depth as Wheeler and Mejia will no doubt create 2 exits stage right for the current group. Wheeler replaces Pelfrey, if this org has any common sense.

When Darryl Strawberry (whose average as a Met was a somewhat underwhelming .240 and the majority of whose home runs had no effect on the outcome of the game) was playing his second or third season, someone wrote an editorial pointing out that you can only use the word "potential" for so long. And then, well, what you see is exactly what you have.

I believe Pelfrey has reached that point. It's time for him to go. Or be sent packing.

As a Met, Strawberry's batting average was .263 which was higher than the league average at that time.

During Strawberry's Mets career he hit 43% better than than the league average hitter. He was the 9th best hitter in baseball over that stretch.

Strawberry was 6th in Win Probability Added during his time as a Met. WPA measures the 'timeliness' of a players hits. For example:
A single leading off a game increases WPA by about 4%.
Whereas a walk-off single with the bases loaded down 1 in the bottom of the ninth increases WPA by about 73%.

You're wrong about Strawberry

The 'problem' with Pelfrey is that his actual contributions have been slightly underrated while Mets fans (like all team fans) likely overrated him as a prospect.
Unlikely the Mets will tender Pelfrey a contract after he missed basically the entire season this year. Certainly the possibility that the mets will release him then attempt to resign him exists.

It's playoffs or bust for the Mets next year in 2015.

I don't think it's quite that dramatic. If they win 84-86 games and don't make the playoffs, most everyone will keep calm. They'll have the pitching (barring more injuries) but will need to pull off some deals involving top prospects to get the offense they need.

Mets/Marlins will fight it out for 2nd in NLE, but in addition to Nats/Cards/LAD/Pirates that should make playoffs, the Cubs should also be ascending. Giants always in the mix, but they have more questions than other contenders.
