How is it false? They were 31 wins above .500 at the end of last season. At this moment they're 8 above.
Last year the Phillies was never in any danger of losing the division lead. This year the Nats and Braves are the best two teams in the division and even though the Mets are below .500 they are still competing. Not only that but if the NL East wasn't strong this year would the Phillies have been in last place the entire month of July???????
If the NL was stronger last year the Phillies would have been in a battle for the NL East division title. They never were so that confirms that the division was weaker last season
Or, an alternative hypothesis, it's silly to use win-loss record to judge a division's (or a team's) strength in May.
At the time, the Phillies had never been in last place that late in the season and even with the injuries most believed they were better than a last place team in the division because of Hamels, Lee, and Halladay. So now as we sit 2 days from August it appears that those 3 ACES are not as good as the media makes them out to be. Especially LEE and HALLADAY
Both Lee and Halladay had their crappy performance overshadowed by two COMEBACKS earlier in the week.
