Brian McTaggart of MLB.com is predicting what the Astros' Opening Day roster might look like. It's pretty close to what I'm expecting, and there's less than a week left of Spring Training.
Great Opening Day win for the 'Stros with Framber Valdez outdueling Shohei Ohtani. Most notable is that this is Houston's tenth consecutive Opening Day victory. Ten in a row. You'd have to go back to the days of the Boston Beaneaters to find that type of record. Pretty incredible.
Astros have now won ten straight home openers, and last night proved another great win, 8-3 over the Los Angeles Angels.
Altuve will be out of the lineup for at least a couple of days (strained hammy), but Alvarez is back with a vengeance (two homers in last night's game).
Verlander, in his win, gave up a home run and four runs overall over 7 innings, but his ERA went down as all four runs were unearned after three fielding errors by others.
Here's a play that Martin Maldonado had actually been working on all year, and it paid off on this one play from last night (at this writing). Check it out....
You won't believe this, but the Astros did not just see one immaculate inning pitched,.............
..........they saw two!
Luis Garcia and Phil Maton each pitched an immaculate inning (nine pitches, three strikeouts) in the second and seventh innings, respectively, in Arlington against the Texas Rangers. Even more incredible, they did it against the same three Ranger hitters: Nathaniel Lowe, Ezequiel Duran, and Brad Miller. It was the first time in MLB history that two immaculate innings were thrown in the same day. Not only that, but by the same team in the same game.
Oh, and it was also Dusty Baker's birthday (73 now).
I’m watching the Astros on Friday Night Baseball on Apple TV +
10 runs in in the inning so far for the Astros and they lead 13-3 .
(And just as I finished typing the previous sentence, a foul out ended the inning)
When three runs were in, Altuve came up with the bases loaded.
I thought…wouldn’t it be great if he hit a grand slam (I,was thinking about that walk off grand slam he hit in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Yankees).
Quality pitches by Foster and he got Altuve for a second straight strikeout.
Then Brantley came up…….grand slam . Gave me goosebumps.
Then Bergman walked.
Then home run by Alvarez.
Then home run by Tucker.
Grand slams by both the Yankees and the Mets as well tonight.
More than a few games coming up soon (for the Astros) with the Yankees and Mets.
Verlander, in his win, gave up a home run and four runs overall over 7 innings, but his ERA went down as all four runs were unearned after three fielding errors by others.
Verlander.....8-2, with a 1.94 ERA
And now, JV has 9 wins. Got the win in Game 2 at Yankee Stadium.
