They are going to have a hard time shopping Hamels as long as they want a bunch of prospects. I know the Dodgers are interested in Hamels but I am not sure they'd ship away 3 prospects for him. Especially when they are probably confident that they could get him in the off season.

Ned gave up McDonald and Lambo for Dotel. Hamels is at least 1 prospect better than Octavio

If LA feels they have enough for 2012 w/o Hamels and feel the favorite in November to get him, why would that matter? It comes down to how much is it worth it to LA to get him for 2 months over what they would give up via signing him as a FA.

Where are they gonna get this money from?? Howard, Halladay, Lee, Papelbon, Ruiz and Rollins are already locked up for about $105-$110 million next year.

The same place all the money comes from. It isn't like they are going broke.

Obviously for the Phils the best possible option is to trade Hamels for prospects and then sign him after the season.

Sellout crowds every night. Plus their TV deal is expiring soon, and they'll get a big boost in their revenue from the new deal, provided they keep a quality product on the field. Money will come off the books after this year too...Blanton, Victorino, Polanco. Hell, they can raise the price of a beer by a buck. Plus, there's also the chance that if Hamels is signed, Lee may get traded.

It is going to be very hard to trade Cliff Lee, especially if he continues to pitch mediocre, because he has so much money and so many years left on his contract.

Lee's contract is almost as big an albatross for the Phillies as Ryan Howard's contract is. (As a side note, IMO the contract the Phillies gave Cliff Lee is the contract they should have given Roy Halladay, if you are going to give the kind of contract they gave Lee to a pitcher in his 30s.)
