Who were some of the greatest teams which never made it to the World Series?
In the modern era, I'm thinking 1993 Giants, 1994 Expos, 2001-02 Athletics, and of course the 2001 Mariners. I'm sure there were more throughout history who for some reason didn't make it, even in the era before divisions.

'61 Tigers. 101-61, but finished 8 games behind the Yankees.

The 2001 Mariners had the most regular season wins of any team ever....still hold the record to this date, and I doubt it gets broken anytime soon.

And even though I'm a Yankees fan, those 01 A's should've had home field advantage. They had the second best record in baseball that year with a 102 wins, but because they played in the same division of the team who had 114 (or was it 116??) wins, they could only get the wildcard.

The following is a list of post-1920 teams that won 100 or more games (95 prior to the first expansion) but did not make it to the World Series:

1928, '71 and 2001 A's; '01 Mariners; '77 Royals; '20, '54 and '80 Yankees; '50 and '61 Tigers; '76, '77 and '11 Phillies; '35, '41, '45, '49 and '05 Cardinals; '88 Mets; '93 and '03 Giants; '99 D'backs; '20 White Sox; '98 Astros; '48 and '49 Red Sox; '42, '46, '51 and '62 Dodgers; '93, '97, '98, '02 and '03 Braves. (Hope I didn't miss any.)

These teams would make some great Strat-O-Matic leagues.
