I know Roger Clemens` secret.

Headlines:
Last night, Roger pitched great. In 3 innings, he walked one and struck out 3. He pitched with great control throwing outstanding pitches. Amazingly, his fastball was clocked at 88 mph. This is an amazing feat that 50 year old, after 5 year hiatus, can throw heat with this type of control. Amazing!

That's basically what the headlines will read like this morning. Followed up by the question, How far will Roger go? Thats the question that everyone is asking, does Roger plan on MLB return? Not necessarily. The secret is that Roger is pitching solely to dispel steroid rumors. Roger addressed the steroid situation in one sentence in a interview, 2 days ago. Its not verbatim but I remember this light bulb/convincing statement, "one person has accused me already." Roger also knows public opinion. Roger is pitching for the public opinion. This is win win situation for Roger, because he looks good no matter the result or even how far he goes in this "return." Roger's secret is to change opinions by adding responsible doubt, "maybe Roger was not using the steroids." How many 50 year old's can do that?

Let the out of court fight begin!

I think a lot of people are interpreting Clemens' return as a public relations move. Some have suggested that Clemens wants to reset the HoF voting clock so that his consideration won't take place in the current atmosphere of hostility to PEDs cheats. Your above theory fits with that.

He might have had better luck if he had gone the Jimmy Swaggart route and made a tearful confession followed by public forgiveness. Instead he decided to go the Pete Rose route....unable to live with the idea of his carefully built public image being soiled, it becomes deny, deny, deny, lie, lie, lie.

Don't forget he is broke (video game disaster) so if he gets back to "work" doing what he was known for then their might be some endorsement money available (back pain, arthritis commercials, viagra etc!).

The Jimmy Swaggart analogy provides food for thought. Some time after the tearful confession, Swaggart again engaged in the same unacceptable behavior and was permanently defrocked by his denomination. Their standards were higher than MLB's.

My favorite aspect of the Clemens downfall saga is imagining the conversation when he was informed by the directors of the Houston sports hospital that had been named after him, that they were removing his name from the clinic. In public the clinic operators stated that the name change had nothing at all to do with any accusations flying around about Clemens, rather the name change was simply a decision to try and broaden the description of the services offered.

What I wonder is whether or not they pushed this same pr line when informing Clemens that his name was being revoked, or was it...

"Now look, Roger, you have to understand. We think you are great. We know you are innocent. It is just that all this negative publicity is killing us, its like we were called Hitler Hospital or something. Now, c'mon, don't be like that Rog, you understand, don't you?"

I think I prefer the first version...them lying to Clemens about why the name was changed. That way Roger gets a taste of what we feel when we hear his transparent denials.

Clemens faced 11 batters and struck out two, in the Skeeters 1-0 win over Bridgeport last night. He threw 37 pitches, 24 strikes, allowed one hit. Faced Joey Gathright twice, struck him out once.

That's what I figured. If he's selling a Bentley to pay bills, you know Rusty Hardin doesn't come cheap.

Besides, Nolan Ryan was supposedly still tipping 90 on the gun after he was done, even after he recovered from blowing up his elbow...so Rog can get in line.
