Qualifying round starts today.

Games are being held in Taiwan, Panama, Germany and Florida

Teams from South Africa, Israel, Spain, France, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, the Czech Republic, Panama, Brazil, Colombia, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Thailand, Taipei and New Zealand will be competing.

Some former MLB players that you may have heard of who are competing include: Shawn Green, Gabe Kapler, Shawn Hill, RJ Swindle, and Wil Ohman.

A few prospects of note will be playing: Texas' Engel Beltre, the Dodgers' Joc Pederson, and the Phillies' Tyson Gillies

Other big league names who are coaching: Barry Larkin, Larry Walker, Eric Gagne, Brad Ausmus and Dennis Boucher

I was lucky enough to get to some WBC games in Sweden in 2009.

The baseball isn't the highest level, but it can only be great for the sport that you all love, and I hate, to expand on the world stage.

You can watch a live-stream of tonight's game at the official WBC website.

What happened here? How did the WBC go from an event which was supposed to be played in March, to an event being played in September without a US or Japanese team? I thought that the MLB and Nippon Baseball were the sponsors of the event.
