Nats 6 @ Reds 5.

Nats, Brewers & Pirates were the only 3 teams to sweep their opening weekend series while the White Sox won the first 2 vs. the Royals before the final game was rained out. Those are the only 4 teams in baseball that are left unbeaten. Eaton started the game with a single, and Anthony Rendon added his first homer of the year for a quick 2-0 Nats lead, the 3rd time this series they scored an opening inning run. Harper homered in the 6th to put the Nats up 3-0, before Duvall doubled in the bottom half to put the Reds on the board. Eaton homered in the 7th for a 5-1 Nats lead before the Reds got 2 back in the 8th on a Billy Hamilton double and than Hamilton scoring on a double play ball from Duvall. Harper added his second homer of the game in the 9th and they needed that extra run as Phil Gosselin had a 2 run homer in the 9th to finish the scoring. Gio Gonzalez (1-0) allowed 1 run on 5 hits with 1 walk and 7 strikeouts in 6 innings, Madson (2nd hold) pitched a 1-2-3 8th and Doolittle (2nd save) allowed 2 runs on 1 hit (1 homer) with a hit batter and strikeout in the 9th

Nats head to Atlanta for a 3 game series with the Braves. Tanner Roark (13-11, 4.67 in 2017) starts for the Nats and he'll be opposed by Sean Newcomb (4-9, 4.32). Game time slated for 7:35. Reds stay in Cincinnati and welcome in the Cubs who were only able to win 2 of 4 in Miami against the Marlins.

Default 4-0

Nats 8 @ Braves 1.

Turner started the game reaching on an error, went to 3rd on a Sean Newcomb throwing error on an errant pick off, scored on a Rendon groundout , and after 2 walks to Harper & Zimmerman Howie Kendrick doubled for a 2-0 lead. Harper had a 3 run homer in the 2nd after Pedro Severino & Rendon singled in the inning to make it 5-0. In the Braves half of the 4th Ender Inciarte singled, stole second, and scored on a Freddie Freeman single. Harper walk, Kendrick double and Wilmer Difo intentional walk would load the bases and Harper would score on Severino’s groundout for a 6-1 lead. Tanner Roark worked through a wild pitch, error and runners on 2nd & 3rd and 0 outs in the Braves half of the 5th to not allow a base runner. Michael Taylor walked with 1 out in the 9th, Difo doubled, and both scored on Goodwin’s single for the final runs of the night. Roark (1-0) allowed 1 run on 4 hits with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts in 7 innings. Newcomb (0-1) allows 6 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits (1 homer) with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts in 4.1 innings. For those keeping track at home, the Nationals are the only team in baseball that has yet to be tied or be trailing after ANY half inning this year. They started the season with 4 road games, scored in the first inning all 4 games and the opponent never got back to even the rest of the way.

Game 2 of the series is on Tuesday. A.J. Cole (3-5, 3.81 in '17) starts for the Nats and he'll be opposed by Braves ace Julio Teheran (0-0, 6.35). Game time slated for 7:35.

Default 4-1

Nats 6 @ Braves 13.

Bryce Harper ground out scored Adam Eaton, and Ryan Zimmerman homered in the first to put them up 3-0, and run the Nats to a 36.5 straight inning streak where they have lead. That would end after the Braves finished batting in the first as the Braves scored 4 and put the Nats behind for the first time all season. Nick Markakis would have a 1 out double, and than Preston Tucker would have a 3 run homer to put the Braves in front 4-3. Starting pitcher A.J. Cole would hit his first career major league home run in the 2nd to tie it at 4. Ozzie Albies would give the Braves the lead for good on a RBI single in the 2nd, and than Freddie Freeman would hit a 3 run homer to give the Braves an 8-4 lead. Harper would homer in the 3rd for a 5-8 deficit, and the Braves would get that run back in the bottom half on a Chris Stewart single. Dansby Swanson single would knock Cole from the game and a 10-5 Braves lead, and then in the 5th Freeman singled to put the Braves up 11-5. Lane Adams had a 2 run single in the Braves 8th to finish the scoring for the Braves, and then Howie Kendrick had an RBI groundout in the 9th for the final runs of the game. Cole (0-1) allowed 10 runs on 10 hits (2 homers) with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts in 3.2. Julio Teheran couldn’t make it out of the 3rd as he got hit for 5 runs on 6 hits (with 3 homers) with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts, Shane Carle (1-1) had 1 hit, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts in 3.1 to pick up the win.

The final game of the series goes on Wednesday. Mike Foltynewicz (0-0, 3.60) starts for Atlanta against Max Scherzer (1-0, 0.00). Game time scheduled for 12:10. As for the Wednesday game the Braves lead 3-1 in the 4th courtesy of 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the first.

Default 4-4

Wednesday: Nats 1 @ Braves 7.

Nats would waste a 2nd & 3rd scoring opportunity as Trea Turner struck out to end the scoring threat in the first, the first time in 5 games this year the Nats failed to score in the first inning. After retiring the first 2 Braves in the first, Max Scherzer would allow a double to Freddie Freeman, Nick Markaikis reached on a Wilmer Difo error, and then Preston Tucker made them pay with a home run. Pedro Severino was hit by a pitch, moved to second a wild pitch, and scored on Scherzer’s single in the 2nd to cut the deficit to 1-3, but would get picked off first to end the inning. Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz would double home 2 runs in the 4th, Ryan Flaherty would double in the 8th and than would score from 2nd on a passed ball by Miguel Montero to finish the scoring. Foltynewicz (1-0) allowed 1 run on 4 hits with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts in 5.1 and Sam Freeman (1st hold) had 1 strikeout facing the only batter he faced. Scherzer (1-1) allowed 5 runs (only 2 earned) on 6 hits (1 homer) with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts in 5 innings. Braves have Thursday off and will resume play on Friday in Denver when they open the home portion of the schedule for the Rockies for a 3 game series. Nats open their home portion of the schedule on Thursday against the Mets when they play a 3 game series against the Mets. Jacob deGrom (1-0, 1.59) started for the Mets against Stephen Strasburg (1-0, 1.42) game time was 1:05.

Thursday: Mets 8 @ Nats 2.

Adam Eaton doubled and Anthony Rendon singled home Eaton to put the Nats up 1-0 the 6th time in 7 games this year the Nats got a first inning run. Jay Bruce doubled in the 2nd, went to third on Adrian Gonzalez’s groundout and scored on a Strasburg balk. Eaton had a 2 out walk and Rendon doubled home Eaton to make the score 2-1, but Eaton had to leave the game with an ankle injury on the slide. Yoenis Cespedes homered to lead off the Mets half of the 4th and then in the 5th a Michael Conforto doubled was overturned on review to a 2 run homer to put the Mets in front for good 4-2. The game turned in the 6th inning. Brian Goodwin lead off with a single and after back-to-back walks to Rendon & Bryce Harper loaded the bases with 0 outs deGrom got Ryan Zimmerman to fly out to shallow right, Howie Kendrick to line out sharply to SS, and then ended the Nats threat and for all intents and purposes the game when he struck out Turner looking on 3 pitches, the last pitch on a high streak which got Turner ejected from the game. In the Mets half of the 7th, Brandon Nimmo would double with 1 out, Conforto walked, Cespedes should have struck out but his swing was called no swing and he walked later on in the at bat to set up Bruce with a bases loaded opportunity and 2 outs and Bruce put the game out of reach with a grand slam. deGrom (2-0) allowed 2 runs (1 earned) with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts in 6 innings. Strasburg (1-1) allowed 4 runs on 5 hits (2 homers) with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts in 6 innings. Teams have Friday off and will resume the series on Saturday: Steven Matz (0-1, 6.75) starts for the Mets to face Gio Gonzalez (1-0, 1.50) with a start time scheduled for 1:05.

Saturday: Mets 3 @ Nats 2.

Michael Taylor started the 5th reaching on a Todd Frazier throwing error, went to second on a Goodwin sac bunt, stole 3rd with Severino batting and then scored on a Severino single. For the 3rd time in the series the Mets would come back and tie the game after the Nats scored the first run as Frazier had a 1 out double and scored on a Travis d’Arnaud single. Harper homered to left-center leading off the 3rd, but once again for the 4th time this series the Mets would tie it up after the Nats took the lead as Amed Rosario singled to lead off the 7th, scored on Asdrubal Cabrera’s double, and then Cabrera would score on a Frazier ground out. By the way shout out to MLB for having absolutely terrible umpire’s that want to be the star of their own show and think people actually pay money to see them. Rendon struck out in the 3rd inning, tossed his bat into the opponents batter’s box, didn’t mutter a single word and was ejected by home plate umpire Marty Foster!!! MLB really needs to do something with umpire’s this is beyond ridiculous. If MLB is going to fine players & managers for criticizing the umpire’s, the umpire’s should get fined for being incompetent. Rendon’s spot in the order came up in the 5th with the Nats leading 1-0 with Severino on 2nd and again leading off the 8th with the Nats trailing 3-2. Maybe Rendon doesn’t have a hit in either spot, but he’s been one of the hottest hitters in the lineup, he’s definitely got a better chance than Matt Reynolds who replaced Rendon in the lineup. The series finale is on Sunday. Matt Harvey (0-0, 0.00) starts for the Mets against Tanner Roark (1-0, 1.29). Game time slated for 8:08 because it’s the stupid ESPN game.

I agree on Foster's move. Our bullpen so far though has been terrific, though, and in all likelihood, Ramos in 8th would face Rendon vs Thames v Reynolds. I like our odds either way. Matz also pitched very well, so I like his odds inning 5 vs Rendon, also.

Rendon is a better hitter than Reynolds, but as of now, Zimmerman and Taylor are drastically, effectively, shortening your lineup. That's the big Nats problem so far.

Today, your only consistently effective bats were Harper and Severino.

Default 4-5

Mets 6 @ Nats 5 (12 innings).

Welp, THAT was fun . First time since August 25, 2015 they are under .500 at any point in the season. You may remember that 2015 as the last year the club missed the postseason, but I'll at least counter that and say "you can't lose in the first round if you don't even make the playoffs" so there! Bryce Harper followed an Anthony Rendon single in the first to make it 2-0. After retiring the first 2 Mets in the 3rd inning Tanner Roark would walk the bases loaded and allow a grand slam to Adrian Gonzalez to put the Mets up 4-2. Pedro Severino had an RBI double in the 4th, but Asdrubal Cabrera followed that up in the 5th and restored the Mets 2 run lead with a solo home run in the 5th. Trea Turner would plate Harper on a single in the 6th to cut it to 5-4 but would get thrown out at home when he tried to score from 2nd on an infield single. Nats got Brian Goodwin to 3rd following a stolen base and an error, but Adam Eaton & Rendon ended the inning on ground outs. Nats would tie the game in the 7th on a Michael Taylor single. Nats loaded the bases in the 9th but Taylor swung at 3 pitches outside of the strike zone and Severino looked at 3 pitches in the strike zone to end the threat. Neither team did much of anything in extra's and the Mets won on a Yoenis cespedes single. Matt Harvey allowed 4 runs on 9 hits (1 homer) with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts in 5 innings, Robert Gsellman (1st blown save) allowed 1 run on 2 hits with a strikeout and walk in 2 innings, Seth Lugo (1-0) pitched 3 scoreless innings allowing 1 hit, 3 walks (2 intentional) and 3 strikeouts. Jacob Rhame (1st save) had a strikeout and hit allowed in a scoreless 9th. Roark allowed 5 runs on 5 hits (2 homers) with 4 walks and 9 strikeouts in 5 innings and Brandon Kinztler (0-2) picks up his second loss in as many days allowing 1 run on 2 hits with a walk in 1 inning of work.

Mets head to Miami for 3 games with the Marlins beginning on Monday night. Nats meanwhile continue with their 10 game home stand and will welcome in the Atlanta Braves for 3 games beginning on Monday night. Julio Teheran (0-0, 10.13) starts for the Braves against Max Scherzer (1-1, 1.64). First pitch slated for 7:05.

Default 5-5

Braves 0 @ Nats 2.

Anthony Rendon doubled, Bryce Harper walked, and Howie Kendrick drove in both with a 2 out double in the first. That would be the lone 2 runs of the game. The only other highlight of the game came in the 7th when Max Scherzer lead off with a single and then had his first career stolen base when he swiped second. Julio Teheran (0-1) allowed 2 runs on 5 hits with 4 walks and 7 strikeouts in 6 innings. Scherzer (2-1) had the first complete game of the MLB season allowing 2 hits with 10 strikeouts in 9 innings registering the first, I believe, 100+ game score of the year. Stephen Strasburg (1-1, 3.65) starts on Tuesday against Mike Foltynewicz (1-0, 2.61), game time schedule for 7:05.
