I'm not saying it's good to throw things, but MLB has needed a wake-up call for years. Not with the umps, but the organization as a whole. It's basically on its last leg with the financial disparities which plague it and allow only 8-10 teams to be competitive in the free-agent market year-in, year-out. If fans want to let out their frustrations in a non-destructive manner, I can't blame them.
Would we even be debating the call to this extent if the fans had sat on their hands afterwards?
Another thing to consider here is that in the stadium it looked like we clearly got hosed on the "interference" play at 1st base earlier in the game (I'm aware TV showed it looked to be an all right call but in the stadium we didn't know that) and it also looked like we got screwed on the Jonny Venters tag out play out at 1st base as well. Plus just talking to/overhearing fans throughout the day and night Braves fans were charged up and pissed off we had to be in that stupid game to play a team we're better than and finished 6 games ahead of.
So when the replacement ref out there made up the outfield fly rule on the spot the initial outburst of throwing was in response to that. It was about 3 hours of pent up frustration being unleashed.
Over the PA it was announced several times that if the throwing continued it could end in a forfeit of the game. So that lead to some of those "classy" Cardinals fans to start throwing beer cans on the field to encourage a forfeit. And then of course the Cardinal players broke out in an "infield fly rule" chant after the game. So stay class St. Louis.

Yes, and Oakland and Baltimore should enjoy their 2-3 year window while they can, because most of their current rosters will be unattainable to them when they reach free agency.
Fans were angry at a call (and an ejection, I think) in Los Angeles sometime in the 90s - on "free baseball" night. The fans threw the balls onto the field, the umpires called the game, and the Dodgers started giving away baseball vouchers instead of baseballs.
Last night's game shows one of the reasons a one-game playoff is a bad idea. (There are other reasons, too.) Questionable calls are part of the game - playing at least 2 out of 3 would lessen their effect.
These things happen. People get drunk and rowdy. There's a reason glass isn't sold at sporting events. At least these drunkards put some people to work.
I refuse to get involved in stupid conversation. If you don't know the reason why it;s not just a game then you have a lot to learn about professional sports.

Those same Braves fans that threw a hissy fit will continue to pay money to watch this team next year. Win or lose, no fans physically gain or lose anything from a sports game. They get up out of seats, navigate their ways into their cars, go home and get on with their life. The Braves made several key errors throughout the game and that why they ultimately loss. Nonetheless, there is no excuse for spectators who have no physical impact on the game to throw debris out on the field.

I don't endorse the behavior of my fellow fans who throw debris onto the field and I didn't partake in it but all of those faux outrage and phony baloney moral high horse soapboxing is ridiculous. All of this "only in Atlanta" BS is garbage. Until this game everyone criticized Atlantans as being too passive and fair weathered. Situations like this happen at sporting events with some frequency and it's not unique to Atlanta. Situations like this have happened for less in other cities. So lets all stop pretending like this is some national outrage.
