Apparently the Toronto owners have decided to be "major market" guys again. The economics of the metro area certainly indicate they could support a "big spending" franchise.

Trading players and buying shirts are somewhat different transactions.

If both teams are pleased with the result, they're more likely to do business again. If all a GM cares about is fleecing his trading partner, he won't be long for the business.

Yep, few folks recall that when the Jays were winning in '92 & '93 they were also out-spending the Yankees and most AL teams.

Then came two decades of "thrift."

And losing.

Good to see the owners finally loosening the purse strings again.

Not really. Exchanging one asset for another.

Not if he's able to continue making deals. Remember both GM's need to agree.

How many GM's in the history of baseball have had an agreement in place and then said, "Wait...we really need to give up more"?

I've heard that D'Arnound is now the #1 prospect and the pitcher that they acquired from Toronto is now #3.

Mariners and Angels make a deal

SP Jason Vargas for 1B/DH Kendrys Morales.

Pretty fair trade. Both players are free agents after the season. Both are typically 2ish WAR players. Both fit a need for their new team. I don't think Morales is a great fit in Seattle's stadium...but I haven't looked real closely.

One interesting thing is that if Morales DH's (instead of bumping Justin Smoak off of 1B) Jesus Montero will be without a full time position.

From the linked article:
Quote:
Nakajima opened with this statement:

"Hi Oakland, my name is Hiroyuki Nakajima, but you can call me Hiro. I am honored to be here today. Thank you very much, Mr. Beane."
Quote:
Nakajima acknowledged while sitting alongside general manager Billy Beane that he spent the previous 24 hours memorizing his opening dialogue to the point he was "getting nervous, even in my dreams."
Doesn't look like the A's will need to hire a motivational coach for Hiro.
