Japanese pitcher Shohei Otani will play in the US instead of in Japan

Otani is 18 and can throw 100 MPH. He also throws a slider, splitter, curve and maybe a knuckleball.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of a contract he signs. Under the newest CBA, international signings are limited to $2.9 million for this off season - otherwise a stiff penalty is enforced.

The cutoff for 2013 super-two status is 2 years 139 days.

Drew Storen is one key name who was over the cutoff and will earn himself a hefty raise.

Interesting situation with the Yankees, Rafael Soriano and Mariano Rivera.

Soriano is under contract next season for $14 million. However, he has an opt-out clause. If he opts out of the contract, he is paid a $1.5 million buyout.

If Soriano opts out the Yankees can offer him the Qualifying Offer of $13.3 million. They would almost certainly do this. With the questions about Rivera they need another arm in the bullpen, so they'd likely want Soriano to remain in NY. But if he chooses to leave, by making the QO, they'd pick up an extra draft pick.

For Soriano, he has to opt-out. He'll pick up the $1.5 million buy out plus he can resign with the Yankees for $13.3 million. Instead of making $14 million next season he'll make $14.8 million.

Look up Adam Eaton of the Dbacks. He's why Chris Young got traded away.

Arizona also changed the guys calling games on TV. Steve Berthiaume from ESPN and former manager Bob Brenly will replace Daron Sutton and Mark Grace. I guess Sutton annoyed management too much. Grace had 2 DUIs in the span of a year.

I don't love him as much as a lot of people do. I think he's good. I don't think he's a star.

Plus, just because you have a replacement doesn't mean you should just give a good player away. They didn't get much back for Young. Absolute steal for Oakland

Agreed, I don't have a real high view of Oakland's acquisition, but they traded very little to get him.

Adam Eaton is why Chris Young got traded; Chris Young to Oakland almost assures Coco Crisp is gone.

Dumb move by the Dbacks.

Gonna miss Young, and we get an aged reliever and an average SS.

Detroit Tigers:

Leyland will retire; Valverde is already gone.

It's that exciting time of the year when teams (and players) have to make decisions on contract options.

The Phillies did the no-brainer and exercised their $5 million option on Carlos Ruiz.

Equally obvious, but more in doubt the Dodgers declined their options on Juan Rivera, Matt Traenor and Todd Coffee

White Sox active today.

Signed Jake Peavey for 2-years and $29 million.

Picked up Gavin Floyd's option.

Surprisingly did not pick up Youkilis' option. I'm not sure of the value of the option, maybe they'll make him a Qualifying Offer. There aren't a lot of 3B available.

Unsurprisingly did not pick up Brett Myers' option.

Mets also made the no-brainer decision to pickup David Wright's and RA Dickey's options.

Braves kept Brian McCann, Tim Hudson and ?Paul Maholm?
