It's already heating up

Teams announce dbacks get heath bell, a's get chris young (OF) and marlins get 3b prospect yordy cabrera. Obvs $ involved
This is a crazy trade. Is there more to it?

The DBacks give up Chris Young (12 WAR over last 3 seasons) for Heath Bell (3.5 WAR over last 3 seasons).

The Marlins get rid of Bell who's been meh the last 2 seasons and get Cabrera who's one of the A's top prospects.

Great trade for Oakland. Good trade for Miami. MOD CUT for Arizona

EDIT: A's also send Cliff Pennington to Arizona. That's helps a little, but still, MOD CUT for Arizona. A below average SS and below average closer for a potential star CFer.

Another off season note.

The new 'Qualifying Offer' as created by the new CBA will be for $13.3 million. If a team wants compensation picks for losing a free agent, they must offer him a 1-year $13.3 million deal.

Looks like Beane is working more of his magic, but another OF? Must be a prelude to another trade.

Or, he knows that Moss, Reddick and even Crisp are not likely to all repeat their success from last season.

The A's basically traded nothing at all for Chris Young. Pennington is very average and Yordy Cabrera is a B level prospect.

ESPN works fast. I was looking up Young's career stats on their site and discovered that they already have him depicted in an Oakland uniform.

This must be the prelude to moving some outfielder on the roster to another club, the A's not only already have a lot of outfielders, most are the sort with more or less the same set of batting skills as Young...low average power hitters.

The A's got some good glove work, but not much plate production from the 2B/3B/SS and catcher positions, that is where they need to upgrade the bats.

Well, Beane says he will not move any of his OFers under contract, which leaves Gomes as the odd man out, right? Then again, I've learned BB tends to say one thing and do another...but if true one of them would have to DH when all four are healthy. And hopefully this means Drew will be re-signed at SS.

Jon Farrell, former Blue Jays' manager, is now the manager of the Boston Red Sox.

Apparently the two teams will also swap players as part of the compensation.

Looks like the Red Sox will send Mike Aviles to Toronto.

Weird

Toronto sends David Carpenter to Boston. Carpenter looks like a nothing happening reliever.

I find it very hard to imagine that John Farrell provides more worth to the Red Sox than the difference between Aviles and Carpenter.
