I want Detroit to win, but if I were to bet money, I would have a hard time betting against a rotation that can throw one of five quality pitchers out there. Keep in mind that the worst starter on SF's rotation is a two-time Cy Young Award winner -- that's the worst one on their staff. Their best performers in the last two months, Zito and Vogelsong, completely shut down a Cardinals lineup that had been putting up about 6-8 runs a game against anyone that didn't bring their best stuff to the mound.

Tigers' rotation is vastly underrated while the Giants' is overrated due to their home park.

Tomorrow's starters
Verlander: 6% more line drives, 7% less ground balls, 6% more fly balls, 48% more infield flies, 16% less walks, 37% more strikeouts than the average AL starter. Expected runs allowed of 21% less than the average AL starter.

Zito: 9% less line drives, 10% less ground balls, 19% more fly balls, 41% more infield flies, 19% more walks, 26% less strikeouts than the average NL starter. Expected runs allowed of 23% more than the average NL starter.

Your analysis is overlooking Zito's established ability to inspire his teammates to score plenty of runs. Barry enjoyed 4.69 runs worth of backing per game, the 8th best in the NL. Verlander on the other hand, tended to inspire his teammates to let him do most of the work. He was backed by a mere 3.82 runs per game, 33rd in the AL.

What's the min # of starts for that? Seems like 33rd isn't really that bad.

For the series and weighting each starter for the number of games that he is likely to start

Tigers Starters: 2% less line drives, 3% less ground balls, 2% more fly balls, 10% less infield fly balls, 20% less walks and 26% more strike outs. That's an expected runs allowed of 18% less than the average AL starting pitcher

Giants Starters: 6% less line drives, 13% more ground balls, 21% more fly balls, 17% less in field fly balls, 4% less walks and 2% more strike outs. That's an expected runs allowed that's equal to the average NL starting pitcher.

Decisive starting pitching advantage for the Tigers.

That is out of the 36 AL pitchers who qualified for the ERA title.

It really depends on which Zito shows up. If it's the Zito who's won most of his decisions since August, I'll take Zito. If it's the Zito who leaves hanging curves over the plate to get gobsmacked by the Tigers ferocious lineup, then the McCovey Cove kayakers will be busy.

This should be a tight game. Will be interesting to see how the pitchers come out and how the hitters adjust. I expect Verlander to come out and throw with confidence, and I expect he'll get ahead in the count. Zito's more the finesse guy, and he hasn't seen this Tiger's lineup, so maybe that's a slight advantage to the Tigers, if they have one.

So, how do the Giants feel about going to Detroit for games 3, 4, and 5?
