Cardinals Insider: 10 Questions with Joe Strauss : Stltoday

I'm hearing Ankiel is open to giving pitching one last shot since his market as a position player appears minimal.
Not a lot of need for poor fielding, poor hitting outfielders.

But plenty of teams could use another lefty reliever.

I don't know Rick Ankiel, but I like the idea of Rick Ankiel the player. I like the idea of a guy who was a very good pitching prospect pitching. I like the idea of having a guy on your bench who can pinch hit and strike opposing hitters out.

I really, really hope that this happens.

Of course, this reminds me of Brooks Kieschnick.

Kieschnick as a hitter
336 PA, .248/.315/.444 9% BB, 23% K

Kieschnick as a pitcher
425 BF, .283/.337/.452 6% BB, 16% K

He was a failed pitcher a while back, so why should anyone expect him to succeed now? His control problems were legendary. I hope he has second thoughts about going back.

The control problems appeared to be mental. If he's over those, he could be useful as a pitcher. He's not really useful anymore as an OFer. He's just trying to prolong his career.

Like I said, if he could be a pinch-hitter/defensive replacement/extra bullpen arm that could have some value. And it'd be awesome.
