I like these kinds of stats. I've long wanted to see brain spaz style records. I was thinking of something we might call "RFI" which stands for "Runs Flubbed In" although the "Flubbed" is a cleaned up version of the original conception which also started with an "F".
This stat would attempt to account for runs which score for reasons which elude the scorecards. It would cover such plays as the "Tragic Triangle" which is when two infielders go back and one outfielder comes in while chasing a pop fly, they all pull up short and form a triangle of spectators as the ball drops in the middle of them. There is no error, no one flubbed anything physically, but this was hardly a credit to the batting team. If someone scores as a consequence of a TT, it is a team RFI.
Another RFI play would be the TFT...The Target Free Throw. This occurs when an outfielder scoops up a ball in play and with multiple baserunners on the move, uncorks a throw which goes nowhere near either the cutoff man or any particular base. Someone hustles over and catches it, so again there is no error to be charged, how can there be? We don't even know where the throw was supposed to be going so that it may be ruled off target. If someone scores as a consequence who otherwise would not, that is a RFI.
We might also consider the IALRT...the Ill Advised Lead Runner Throw. Runners on first and second, ball is dribbled back toward the mound, pitcher scoops it up and fires to third base, but too late to get the runner. Once more, no error is charged, but we certainly have a case of bad judgment. If the runner who reaches first base as a consequence of this bad decision scores, or if the runners now on third and second score, but otherwise would not have without the IALRT, that is a RFI or multiple RFI.
The TOOBLAN is the offensive side of this concept, Runs Flubbed Away.. RFA
Thrown out at home for the 3rd trying to score after the hitter was thrown out at first.
The tying run was on second.
