Looking at the charts was the first I am learning that the Marlins had signed Chone Figgins, I figured his career was over after his humiliation in Seattle.

Even if he is now dirt cheap, why would the Marlins want him? If it is a lost season anyway, why not play some kid? Figgins sure isn't going to be around to be a part of the next winning Marlins team, he is just wasting roster space.

I would guess it's a low-risk, medium-sized reward in the form of a pre-trade deadline deal. If Figgins has a decent first half, I'm sure you'd see a trade in an attempt to get a prospect or cash back.

They also brought Juan Pierre back.

Figgins posted WARs of 0.8, -1.2 and -1.2 in his three seasons as a Mariner. He was a sub Mendoza batter the last two seasons. Defensively he is below replacement level. I can't imagine a scenario where some contending team decides that Figgins will be the difference between making the post season and going home, and even if they did, what would they be willing to give up? Some grade Z prospect? How will that help the Marlins?

Using FanGraphs' WAR Figgins has been worth the following per 700 PA's:
2012 -3.6
2011 -2.5
2010 1.3
2009 6.6
2008 4.3
2007 5.4

That's still 2 WAR per season over the last 6 years.

The projections systems on FanGraphs project him for 210 PA's and -.1 WAR.

There's still a small chance that he remembers how to be a useful player. And fans have heard of him.

That last reason you listed is probably the primary motivation for the Marlins. In '13 they will be fielding Giancarlo and a cast of unknowns, that Figgins is something of a "name player" adds a tiny bit of illusion that this is a real ML roster.

Of course what does it say about a team that they would be viewing Figgins as a gate attraction?
