They still play it like it is a meaningless exhibition.

The current All Star structure is contradictory, it is a game which doesn't know what it is supposed to represent. If indeed it is a competitive, meaningful game with something at stake (home advantage in WS) then it should be played like a competitive meaningful game with the best players from each league going at each other for nine innings and the managers exercising their best strategies.

But it isn't played that way, it is played like an exhibition game the purpose of which is to make sure that all the members of both squads get at least a token appearance. The best players are gone by the 4th inning and pitcher selections are based on not upsetting their regular season use. The rule which requires at least one player from each team in the league fixes it so that some better players do not get to go.

It should be one or the other. Either keep the home field advantage reward and play the game in a competitive, meaningful way, or junk the WS prize and just have an exhibition. Right now they have a mess.

No. In fact, there are a lot FEWER minor league teams than there were 50 years ago.

I like the current set up because it gives anyone with a reasonable amount of talent an opportunity to develop the skills to be a major league player.

Minor league baseball gives its fans the opportunity to see baseball close up and personal in a way you cannot at a major league stadium. It is also about the only place where you can see a game affordably.
