Having to play Tampa in multiple series makes me nervous. They always seem to have the Blue Jays number.
The Jays are 5-8 vs the Rays this season so far with six head to head games remaining. However, all of the previous games took place before Toronto "found itself" so to speak. The last meeting between the teams was July 17. The Jays won, leaving their record at 47-47.
Since that time the Jays have gone 40-18.
Further, the Rays will not be playing with the needs of the Jays or the Yankees in mind, they will be playing with their own needs in mind. Since they are out of the race, they will use the remaining games to try out rookies from the expanded roster with winning/losing being of secondary importance to preparing for 2016.
So, I would argue that what went before, the 5-8 record, has little application to the remaining six games.
R. A. Dickey pitched 7 innings and earned the 100th win of his career, backed by dingers from Donaldson (40), Bautista (37) and Pillar (12).
Coupled with the Yankees loss to the White Sox, the Jays magic number is now 6.
Two aces go at it this afternoon as Chris Archer faces David Price. Archer has been a Jays nemesis. This year, he's 3-1 in four starts with an ERA of 0.93.
Who'da thunk Price and Archer would give up 14 runs before the 4th inning was done?
Not moi.
In a wild and weird one, Jays prevailed and afterwards, celebrated with cigars and champagne. They're going to the post-season dance for the first time in 22 years, having secured a wild card position. Naturally, they hope to nail down top seed and guarantee themselves more than a single playoff game.
Bautista hit homers #38 and 39, while Russ Martin chipped in with #22, a career high.
Since the Yanks won as well, the Jays magic number is 5.
Last home game of the season goes this afternoon with Mark Buehrle on the hill against Matt Andriese.
There's no debate: The 2015 AL MVP, Josh Donaldson, hit his 3rd walk-off home run of the season as Toronto swept the Rays and reduced their magic number to 4.
Donaldson now has 41 homers, 122 RBIs and has scored 121 runs.
Justin Smoak helped the cause with 3 hits, including a home run, and 3 RBIs.
Jays wrap up the season on the road, starting tonight with the first of four against Baltimore.
This team is the best I've seen since the world series teams of 92-93. I haven't enjoyed myself this much since then.
Thank you AA, Rogers and Paul Beeston.
Justin Thyme.
