Hopefully their sweep of the dreadful Royals (who now own MLB's worst record) wasn't the high point of their season. They've lost 7 of 9 since the Royals left town and now are about to get passed by the streaking Rays who have won 8 in a row.

Default 20-18

They were 13-6 after they beat the Yankees on April 20 improved to only 4 games back of the Red Sox and 3.5 up on the Yankees. The next day on the 21st they failed to cash in a bunch of early scoring opportunities and than got blown out when the Yankees had a 6 run 6th or 7th inning and that started a stretch where the Yankees won 18 of their next 20 games (was 18 of 19 before they lost on Thursday) while the Jays since that stretch have lost 12 of 19 to fall to 6.5 games back of both the Yanks & Red Sox. I know there's still 5.5 months left in the season, but when your closer (Osuna) is out indefinitely for a domestic violence incident, your best starting pitcher (Stroman) is still struggling to find consistency, your DH (Morales) can't hit his way out of a paper bag then yes it is time to get concerned. To quote ole Yogi here for a minute "It gets late early" and right now that's the case the Jays are in. If the Jays are struggling to beat the Rangers, Rays & Mariners (albeit a decent team so far this year) then I don't expect much. As I said in the last post on here a few weeks ago hopefully the sweep of the Royals wasn't the high point of their season, so far it's looking like the case. Of course that could change a week and a half from now by winning 2 of 3 from Boston this weekend and than taking 5 of 6 from the A's & Mets next week and they'd be right back in the race. Going to need Stroman to start finding it though.

Default 21-20

Walk off homer from Luke Maile on Friday was followed by 2 bad outings to end the weekend. 2 games in New York against the Mets and 4 at home against the A's coming up this week.

First 4 game sweep at home since 2001, and the first 4 game sweep home or away since they lost 4 in a row at Houston in May of 2015. Now don't get me wrong the A's are a pretty good team, holding their own in what is looking like the best or second best division in baseball (take your pick between the AL West & NL Central for that honor [both divisions have 4 of the 5 teams over .500]), but a 4 game sweep at home is ridiculous. It's difficult to have a 4 game sweep as the HOME team, and it's almost unprecedented as the road team to do it, especially in this age of the bullpen. Which brings up what I wrote a week and a half ago, and I'll bold the part that's important:

Welp, they did the exact opposite, they lost 2 of 3 to the Red Sox and than 5 of 6 to the Mets & A's to drop past the Rays in the standings and are now currently 10 games back in the division and 5.5 back of the second wildcard. Anyone that thinks this team is still a contender to win the division I have property on Mars to sell you. They are 1-7-2 in their last 9 series (including the double header split in Cleveland) and that was against mostly inferior teams; the 2 series against the Red Sox, the 1 series against the Yankees & the series vs. the Mariners were the only 4 where the team came in with a winning record (of course the A's are now 25-22, but they came in 21-22), so we can stick a fork in them as far as the division goes. The Wildcard I guess could be a possibility, but why make trades and mortage your future just for a 1 game playoff against Shohei Ohtani, Luis Severino or Chris Sale?? That's why if I'm the Jays I'm putting Josh Donaldson on the market......today. And I know of a certain other bird team that plays in the NL Central where most of the opening day lineup is either currently out injured, or severely under performing their expectations, and despite all that they are only a game and a half out of first, but 1 of 4 teams that are within 1.5 games of the division lead, and even with a struggling & oft-injured Donaldson, that is better than some of the players they have starting right now. Also, time to see what Vlad Guerrero, Jr can do in the big leagues. Yah, it sucks that Kendrys Morales is probably untradeable, but at this point in the season with it starting to slip away like it has see what Vladdy Jr can do, and who knows might pick up the crowd which has been lacking so far this year, and than maybe in August or September.

They host the Angels for 3 and than head to Philadelphia for 3. Hopefully by this time next week they aren't closer to the Orioles for last than the Rays for 3rd.

Assuming they have a huge late inning rally, this is going to be another series loss as they have struck the iceberg.

Lost 2 of 3 to the Angels after winning the opening game, and than won only their second series since mid April with 2 of 3 in Philadelphia before starting a 3 game series in Boston with a loss. 2 more games in Boston, off day on Thursday, 3 in Detroit for the weekend the schedule for this week.

Lost the final 2 in Boston, 2 out of 3 in Detroit to the Tigers, swept in a quick 2 game series by the Yankees including an embarrassing game Wednesday night that was 0-0 going into the 13th inning despite the Yankees starting human piñata Sonny Gray, and than swept the Orioles. 3 in Tampa to begin the week, off day Thursday, and than the Washington Nationals come in for 3 games over the weekend.

Got swept in a 3 game series by the Rays down at the House of horrors known as Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, and than came home and swept a 3 game series from the Washington Nationals trailing in the last third of the game in 2 of the 3 games and coming back to win. Off day Monday before the home stand concludes with a 2 game interleague series against the NL East leading Atlanta Braves and than 4 in California against the Anaheim Angels.

Split the 2 home games vs. Atlanta, and the 4 games in Anaheim to finish 3-3 for the week. Road trip continues with 3 in Houston, and they'll close out the calendar month with a 4 game wraparound series against the Tigers which concludes next Monday afternoon at the Rogers Centre. Canada Day celebrations at the Rogers Centre are usually good, and would expect this one to be no different.

Lost 2 of 3 in Houston, and than split the 4 games with the Tigers who came into the series losers of 10 straight and ended a 12 game losing streak after winning Sunday's game. 5 game slate this week as both of the New York teams pay a visit to the Rogers Centre as the Jays conclude the home portion of the first half of the schedule. Mets are in for 2 games Tuesday & Wednesday, and than the Yankees come in for 3 over the weekend after a day off Thursday, actually the last time the Yankees will visit Toronto this year as the Jays & Yankees will only have 2 series in the second half and both will take place in the Bronx.
