Matt Adams becomes the first player in MLB history to hit two homers in the same game after the 13th inning.

Pablo Sandoval started tonight's game with ten home runs on the year. He had hit only one in July, and only one more (August 27th) since the All Star break.

Tonight against the Padres he hit three, duplicating his World Series show against Detroit.

I'm beginning to think that the teams ahead of the Yankees in the wild card race are determined to lose every game for the rest of the season, except those they play against each other.

The Yankees are limping along playing .500 ball over the last 52 games. But here's how the other contenders are doing, while .500 is good enough to close the gap:
Tampa Bay, 2 games below .500 in the last 31 games
Baltimore 3 games below .500 in the last 26 games
Cleveland 2 games below .500 in the last 32 games
Texas 3 games below .500 in the last 15 games
They all lost last night, except the Yankees. Two more have lost or are way behind this afternoon. The Yankees can forfeit all their road games for the rest of the season, play .500 in Yankee Stadium, and win a wildcard spot. If some of the teams above them pull of a major upset and win a couple of games, the Yankees can go to Houston and finish the season with a practice sweep.

As I suggested before, the second wildcard slot should go to the team what has the highest W-L record in their last 30 games of the season. (Since everybody insists that a second WC team is such a great idea in the first place.)

Default Sign of the Times

Now that the Giants have been officially eliminated from the post season, the remaining games have little meaning and this is reflected in a more relaxed tone from the tv announcers. They do not have to try as hard and that results in things like today against the Rockies.

Giants catcher Hector Sanchez was up in the 7th inning of a day game with two men on and Sanchez was 0-3 to that point, having stranded runners in each at bat. When he grounded out to make it 0-4 and strand two more, announcer Duane Kuiper said "This hasn't been a very good night..ugh...or night of days...that doesn't make any sense..I mean Sanchez hasn't had a good day tonight...ugh...runners on base wise..batting I mean."The cut to the commercial saved the day for Kuiper.

For the second day in a row. the Yankees win and all four teams ahead of them in the WC race lose. Assuming all five teams are .500 ball clubs (which over the past month, they are), the chances are pretty close to 1,000:1 against that happening.

MLB could have a bad situation on their hands should the Yankees make the playoffs.

Yes, if the Yankees (with the help of Arod) win the second spot for WC and win the one-game "Tie-breaker When There Is No Tie", that will certainly prove the prescience of the NYC-based MLB monopoly, which continues to perpetuate the principle that the league championship goes to the highest bidder, especially if New York is the highest bidder.
