Frankly this one-game playoff setup is ludicrous. It's basically a coin toss. There was nothing wrong with the previous playoff system.
There will be something wrong with all possible playoff systems. The two wild cards per league idea was in response to complaints that there was no important distinction between winning your division and being the wild card. The powers that be might not have seen that as sufficient reason to alter the set up, but the change brought with it the always alluring bonus of more revenues. The second wild card allows more teams to be in the race who otherwise would have been eliminated and that boosts attendance. Further, the wild card game is one more day of gate receipts and concession sales for the host team and since everything is riding on these games, they will draw big crowds.

The Reds/Pirates series this weekend would be epic................if not for the bonus wild card.

But there was an important distinction: the division winner always had home field advantage over a wildcard team up to the World Series, where again home field advantage might as well be a coin toss (what a stupid rule). Home field advantage in general was always a motivator to not just squeak into the playoffs but to end up with the best record possible.

At some point the "generating more revenues" scheme becomes transparently cynical and turns away more fans than a single playoff game will draw. And adding ever more teams to the playoff hunt starts diluting the achievement of making the playoffs. And realistically, how many more teams are actually in the hunt that weren't otherwise in the hunt for a playoff spot for most of the season?

There was nothing wrong with the previous playoff system. Baseball season is getting ludicrously long.

That is a false position. The decline in attendance since 2007 is obviously a product of the decline in the economy which took place starting in 2008.

If your thesis is that this decline was caused by revulsion at new revenue streaming methods, then you will first have to identify the new revenue streaming method that was begun in 2008 which caused this cynicism and disinterest.

Agreed... and my Braves are a perfect example.. Last year their whole season came down to 1 WC game. This year they win the division and get a 5 game playoff series as a reward.

It's not a thesis, it's a possible scenario. You said "it hasn't happened yet" when in fact attendance is down this year compared to last. So even if one cannot definitively say it has generated increased fan interest, it hasn't helped either. If you are saying it hasn't happened yet, then you will first have to identify the alternative source of declining attendance.
