The vaunted pitching staff of the Phillies is on a pace to allow 1037 runs to the opposition.
That would still leave them only the second worst defensive team, the Yanks are on a pace to allow 1069 runs.
That would probably lead to a lot of losses for those teams because they are both on a pace to score just 408 runs.
Yeah, that'd give the Phillies about 26 wins and the Yankees 25.
The Phillies' staff hasn't been as bad as it looks. Their staff ERA is 6.70 but their defense independent metrics suggest they should only be giving up 3.93 runs per game. A .322 BABIP and 57% strand rate (.279 and 74% league average) is to blame.
Side note, the Dodgers have a 0.80 ERA thus far. They also aren't THAT good. A .200 BABIP helps but the defense independent metrics say the Dodgers should be giving up 2.11 runs per game.
A's shortstop Jed Lowrie hit his third home run of 2013 against Houston today.
He is on a pace for 162 extra base hits. However that won't lead the league because teammate Coco Crisp also homered and now is on a pace for 185 extra base hits.
The record is 119 by Babe Ruth in 1921.
