I guess the new ownership figures if we can't entertain the fans with our product on the field then let's distract them with the "delightful" shenanigans of Clark the pantless cubby bear. As someone said, he should be named Chokey and only wear a choker collar, chaps and a zipper leather hood with a ball gag.
Steve Goodman who wrote the Cubs unofficial anthem "Go Cubs Go" pretty much sums up my thoughts on the Cubs in this great little song (at the bottom of the page):
I was at an Orioles game on a Thursday night in September like 6 or 7 years ago, back when the Orioles were atrocious, so there were about 7,000 people in the stands (maybe even less) because they were playing some team like the White Sox or Angels and by that time everyone in Baltimore had given up on baseball. Anyways, I missed some guy getting picked off first base because my direct line of sight was on the Oriole bird doing some stupid dance in right field. I actually like the mascots......when watching on TV or in between innings, go into the clubhouse or something when the action is going on.
I voted should I laugh or cry, Michael Wilbon HATES it, but I think it could work. People probably thought Walleye in Boston was a bad idea at first too, but he's turned out pretty well I'd say, so there's hope.
Not only does Clark the cub not wear pants but he is also anatomically correct too. At least our mascot has balls...literally! Now, all we need is a team that has them too.
Plus, there is a guy that has been entertaining fans outside of Wrigley for every game as the unofficial Cubs mascot "Billy the cub" since 2007. And all he wanted was to be hired or at least considered for the official cubs mascot if the Cubs ever hired one. Well, they did and he wasn't considered for the position even though he gets lots of positive reviews. Another "great" management decision by the Cubs.
Don't be too hard on the Cubs - any team can have a bad century...
Thanks but we are now working well into the second century of futility.
