Clayton Kershaw threw what might well be considered the best game ever pitched last night, a 15 k no hit, no walk game (one error kept it from being a perfect game) Game Score 102. (Matt Cain's 2012 perfect game with 14 k's was a 101)
I of course knew this would happen, which is why I had Kershaw in my # 2 slot for a no hitter.
2 points for me for Jeff Samardzija being traded. Unfortunately I was only partially correct about JJ Putz...the Diamondbacks did get rid of him, but designated him for assignment rather than trade.
Some tight races as we go down to the last five games before the AS break. Rather astonishing is the large field competing for fewest wins in baseball. It currently stands:
Cubs 38
Astros 38
Rangers 38
Phillies 39
Red Sox 39
Rockies 39
Diamondbacks 39
Twins 40
Padres 40
That is nine teams all within two games of having the worst record in MLB.
Ashley 83 gets 5 points for Houston, 3 points if the Twins rally and seize last place. I get five points for the Astros, three points if it is the Cubs, Cyborg13 the same. 7Express gets three points for Houston.
In case of ties, points will be awarded on the most generous possible interpretation. For example, if the Astros and Twins tie for fewest wins, then Ashley83 will get eight total points, five for Houston and three for Minnesota.
The other really close race is NL pitcher wins. Currently it is:
Wainwright 11
Greinke 11
Kershaw 10
All of us have some combination of two of those three pitchers on our lists. Greinke lost today to Detroit and will not get another start before the break. Kershaw starts tomorrow night against the Padres, Wainwright goes on Saturday against the Brewers.
Kershaw won his 11th game last night, so we have a three way tie for the NL lead.
If Wainwright wins on Saturday he has the lead to himself and the points yielded will be:
Ashley 83..0
Grandstander ..5
Cyborg13..5
7Express..1
If Wainwright loses or gets a no decision, the three way tie remains and the point distribution will be:
Ashely83..6
Grandstander ..8
Cyborg13..8
7Express..6
In the other close race, Texas has charged from ahead to seize sole possession of the fewest wins crown, but four teams are hot on the trail. It is:
Rangers 38
Astros 39
Cubs 39
Rockies 39
Diamondbacks 39
We were all well positioned to reap multiple points from our fewest wins guesses, but then the Rangers staged an impressive clutch drive, losing their last 8 in a row to snatch sole possession of last place.
It's a gray area. I say give us the points, but I'm biased. Too bad there wasn't a GM question, as the Diamondbacks finally canned Kevin Towers this morning. Maybe now they will quit trading away all their prospects.
