They were talking about this on the Yankees -Red Sox game the other night while David Ortiz was batting and they said it was always a financial reason. NL teams did not want to pay a veteran player a veteran salary just to hit. But in the past few years DH salaries have really come down (by baseball standards) and you may well see the DH expand to both leagues.
