No embarrassment required. The Mets' expected W-L is 4 over .500. They've underachieved much of the year. But not lately.

They have good pitching now and next year might have one of the best staffs in MLB with Harvey coming back and Syndegaard arriving. Gee, Neise, deGrom are all solid. Colon keeps defying age and BMI and even Dice-K has been useful. They're going to be solid spoilers vs Braves, Nats and other NL contenders.

Let's go, Mariners. We're rooting for you to sweep the O's.

So far, not so good. I had hoped the top 3 AL West clubs could handle Baltimore. Up until now they have "handled" them with a 3-4 record. Meanwhile we (the Yankees) are 6-1 since the break but have gained only 2 games on Baltimore.

M's are holding on, but they need to get back to the top of the Wild Card. I would be even happier if they clinched the AL West.

One thing I notice: The Mariners have been active in trading players.

Well, the M's still have a chance. If they keep on until the end, they can still get to the playoffs. They are in great contention, but they need to hold onto it. They have the 5th playoff spot. The next goal is to catch the Angels, and possible the A's.

Yep, AL West not totally out of reach at this point. A bit harder with two teams to overtake though. How 'bout Iwakuma last night though? His K/BB is 10:1. Only Clayton Kershaw is close to that. I wish I still lived up there to be able to take it in at the Safe, but hope it continues to be an exciting continuation of the season.

The M's still have a chance. They were able to get it in 1995. They could do it again. Iwakuma is something.

Only one team to catch and overcome that year, and to come from 13 back was everything going right for the Ms, and everything going wrong for the Angels. Speaking of which, the loss of Garrett Richards will be interesting to see the effect going forward on the Angels. With so little of the season remaining, and a player that only makes his presence felt every fifth game, I'm less inclined to believe it will seriously drag the Angels down.

Still a month plus of baseball left to play, which is - and isn't - a lot. The Ms need to not have many more clunkers like they had against the last game of the Phillies yesterday, or they will spend the rest of the season looking up at the second WC spot.

They're right there, but they're going to have to count on being on the road for the one game playoff if anything. They're six games out of home field for that game.
