You might have wondered why the Giants would have taken a chance on signing Dan Uggla to a minor league deal after the Braves released him, he had fallen to well below replacement level value.
The reason is that second base has been an unmitigated disaster for San Francisco this season.
The regular was supposed to be the elderly Marco Scutaro who after his miraculous run with the Giants in 2012 helped them to the Series, was signed to a foolish two year deal. He has been hurt most of the time since signing, and has played poorly in his rare appearances.
So, after a competitive Spring, they began the season with Brandon Hicks as the starter. Hicks was so so with the glove and batted an anemic .162/.280/.319.
Joaquin Arias had been playing third while Sandoval was on the DL, and when Pablo came back they tried Arias at second. Bad glove. Batted .186/.215/.202.
So they reached down into the minors and called up Joe Panic who has terrorized opposition pitchers to the tune of .222/.275/.254.
So then they called up Ehire Adrianza and he was shaky with the glove while batting .237/.279/.299.
Last week Scutaro finally came off the DL to make his 2014 debut and start earning his 6.6 million. In five games he batted .091/.167/.091...and then went back on the DL.
And that is why they were willing to throw the dice on someone like Uggla. Uggla has been the worst of all so far. 0 for 8 at the plate and three errors in two games.
Collectively in 412 plate appearances the Giants second basemen have batted .179/.259/.280. The six players have combined for 0.1 Defensive WAR, all of it accounted for by Hicks who contributed 0.4 defensive WAR while the others all dragged it back down by being at or below replacement level.
Of the 18 second basemen who are qualified for the batting title so far this season, the lowest OPS belongs to Gordon Beckham of the White Sox with .621. The Giants collective OPS is .539.
It is horrible, there apparently isn't one player in the organization who can play the position with any sort of competence.
So....how about your club? Anyone think that they have a worse situation at a position than this?

Freddy Sanchez never officially retired. He's only 36. He'll probably hurt something the first week he plays, but at least they can get a decent week out of him :-)

Hyperbole. It never took Sanchez a whole week to get hurt.
My team- the Braves. Thier whole line-up is like a black hole. We've scored 2 runs or fewer in almost half of our games! The pitching is very good, but these guys get no support. Very frustrating to watch a team contually get guys on base and not be able to move them due to so many strike-out kings in the line-up. We got rid of one black hole- Uggla, but due to his contract, we're stuck with BJ Upton. Our bench is TERRIBLE. If we make the playoffs, we'll lose 2-1, or something like that.
The A's have 2B, but hoping Callaspo returning from the DL will at least make them respectable in that department. As for the rest....platoons have been working well to fill any other deficits, injury-related or otherwise.
Hell, you beat me to it....Hawkins is pretty good but mostly the bullpen really suxxxxxxxx this year.
