Since winning the World Series is the ultimate goal of any team, I wonder if any team has won, where one player is almost 40% of the payroll.
The way those long contracts go, it's surprising anyone get's anything more than 4-5 years.
The Pirates did that analysis a couple of years ago and no team paying one guy more than 18% of payroll has won a WS. Seemed like they were thinking of breaking that barrier for Martin.
I believe that still holds true given SF and Boston were the past two winners.
The Boston Red Sox have an agreement in place with free-agent third baseman Pablo Sandoval, sources confirmed to ESPN.
....
Sandoval reportedly chose the Red Sox's offer over those from the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres. All three offers were believed to be for five years and at least $90 million.
If this report is true, then perhaps Pablo was not the Happy Panda he appeared to be in San Francisco. If the Giants matched the Red Sox offer, then there was no need for Sandoval to give a home town discount, he wants out for other reasons. Maybe he is thinking about how fat his numbers will be playing in Fenway as opposed to AT&T.

Panda's agent won't confirm it yet. Meantime, BoSox did sign Hanley to 4/$88 with a $22m option. And if they do get Panda, I guess that means Hanley goes to the OF. I don't see any way Boston trades or sits Bogaerts.
If Sandoval is signed, that means only Nelson Cruz is left out there among the big free agent bats this off season. Stanton inked that massive deal with the Marlins, Victor Martinez re-upped with the Tigers, Hanely Ramirez is now a Red Sox and Russell Martin a Blue Jay.

All the more reason for the Braves to trade Justin Upton and Evan Gattis, now that the big bats are off the market
Pablo Sandoval has an agreement in place with the Boston Red Sox, the free-agent third baseman's agent confirmed.
"Yes, we have an agreement with the Red Sox and we're on our way to Boston," Sandoval's agent, Gustavo Vasquez, told The Associated Press by telephone from Florida while about to board a plane to Boston.
The switch-hitting slugger earlier informed the San Francisco Giants he was leaving
"Got the call. He is going to the Red Sox," Giants assistant general manager Bobby Evans told the AP earlier Monday.
From everything I've read, the Giants offer was as good as Boston's, except maybe not the sixth year option. Given Panda was loved in SF and has three rings from there, can you provide any local input on why Panda split to go East?

I've no insider's knowledge, there has been a lot of speculation in the Bay Area media, some of it suggesting that Sandoval had his feelings hurt last year when Hunter Pence was given a long term deal and the Giants didn't extend the same sort of offer to the Panda before the start of the season.
That is just the usual cliches about "new challenge" etc.
My best guess is that he wants fatter stats and he is far more likely to post them playing in Fenway than remaining at AT&T.
Looks like all those Bay Area fans who invested money in buying Panda costumes, or time in making their own, are now stuck with a lot of white elephants. Maybe Sandoval is figuring that he can copyright and franchise Panda merchandise in Boston.

Maybe he just wanted to DH and wanted no more weight restrictions.
Maybe he just wants to eat whatever he wants and get FAT !!!
