This could have been a much better team. There is no excuse for missing out on Kang Jung-ho during the offseason, and he now looks like he's going to be a star for Pittsburgh for the next several years. He could have been a Padre for a tiny fraction of the money now being spent on overpriced relievers and backup outfielders.

They'll still win the second Wild Card.

That's about all we can hope for right about now, is the second Wildcard spot.
I think BJ Upton coming back next week will ad some more power and Speed to the line up.

Let's see how they do this year. Nice addition of Hosmer, West looks loaded once again.

Default 2018: 0-0

Season opener is on Thursday afternoon vs. the Brewers. Clayton Richard (8-15, 4.79 in 2017) starts for the Padres against Chase Anderson (12-4, 2.74 in '17) of the Brewers. Game time scheduled for 4:10 (1:10 local time) but since I am going to do these recaps from the East Coast, I will always use Eastern time.

Default 0-1

Brewers 2 @ Padres 1 (12 innings).

Christian Yelich singled in the 3rd to get the scoring started on the afternoon, and it stayed that way all the way until the 9th when new addition Freddy Galvis singled off of Brewers all star closer Corey Knebel to force extra innings. Padres had the bases loaded and 1 out in the 11th, but Chase Headley grounded into an inning-ending double play, and of course the Brewers take the lead in the next half inning on Orlando Arcia's single and Jacob Barnes struck out the side in the 10th to seal the win. Clayton Richard allowed 1 run on 6 hits with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts in 7 innings while Adam Cimber (0-1) pitched the 12th allowing 1 run on 3 hits with a strikeout. Chase Anderson pitched 6 innings of 1 hit shutout baseball with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts, Josh Hader (1st hold) and Matt Albers (1st hold) combined to allow 2 hits, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts in a combined 2 innings of work, Knebel (1st blown save) allowed a run on 2 hits with a strikeout, Jeremy Jeffers (1-0) allowed 1 hit, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts in 2 innings of work, and finally Barnes (1st save) pitched a 1-2-3 12th with 3 strikeouts in picking up the save.

Four game series continues on Friday evening. Jhoulys Chacin (13-10, 3.89 in 2017 with the Padres) starts for the Brewers against Joey Lucchesi (ML debut) who will be making his major league debut for the Pads. Game time schedule for 10:10.
