The Giants could sure use a revenge sweep at AT&T. SF will have an advantage in the first two contests since they are night games and the Cubs have to stay up past their bedtime to play.
Looks like Cain could use a nap. Six earned runs in 3-1/3rd innings...
Damn, that sweep by the lowly Phillies must have lit a fire under these guys. The only series they've dropped since was the 2-game set with the Tigers.
Since that awful Phillies series, they took 2 of 3 from the Rockies, swept a 4-gamer on the road against the Brewers, split 2 with the Pirates with the third to be made up later, put themselves where they are today with an incredible 4-game sweep of the Giants, swept the Brewers again in a 3-game series at home, took 2 of 3 from the White Sux in hostile territory, dropped 2 to Detroit (I suppose they're permitted a stumble now and then), and just completed a 4-game sweep of the Braves.
Some of these may be patsy teams, but a 4-game sweep of anyone is a heck of a feat, especially on the road, and then to sweep one of 'em again the next week... wow. If they can at least go .500 against the Giants and Dodgers on this week's West Coast swing, they can probably play .500 ball for the rest of the season and keep their playoff spot.
If they got .500 on this road trip they could probably play .450 ball in September and get in. That's how bad the Giants and Dodgers are and how far back the Nationals are. I think even going 2-4 would probably be good enough to play .500 the rest of the way. Got the 1 win in SF, now win again in SF or get 1 in LA, that'd be pretty successful.
Well the Cubbies certainly could have used at least one more win on this road trip, particularly against SF. Annoyingly enough the dirtybirds did the Cubs a favor by keeping the Giants tethered to their organic, GMO-free beanstalk. Just as well, nobody's catching STL anyway so we might as well cheer on the damage they do for the rest of us. But on a similar note let's face it: the Cubs and Pirates -- and to a diminishing extent the Giants -- are in a race to see who gets run through the Cardinal buzz saw in the NLDS.
I certainly don't expect these guys to win every game or even every series... but you gotta take care of business against hapless teams like the Reds.
