My NL predictions, by team:
Braves: Miller
Marlins: Stanton
Mets: deGrom, Familia
Nats: Harper, Scherzer
Phillies: Papelbon
Cubs: Rizzo, Hammel
Reds: Frazier
Brewers: FRod
Pirates: McCutchen, Cervelli, Burnett, Melancon
Cards: Carpenter, Peralta, Wong, Holliday, Rosenthal
DBacks: Goldschmidt
Rockies: Arenado, Tulowitzki
Dodgers: Pederson, Gordon, Greinke
Padres: J.Upton, Norris
Giants: Panik, Posey, Aoki

That's six starting pitchers and five relievers on a 31 man roster.

The other two to fill out the 33 man roster will come from a pool of Kershaw, Bumgarner, Watson, Espinosa, Crawford, Pollack and Cole. I'd predict Watson and Crawford. But given it's Bochy, it'll likely be Bum and Crawford.

Must be something about Missouri...

The Royals aren't the only team doing their voting on the basis of partisan concerns rather than the merits of the players. They have Matt Carpenter leading for the thirdbase slot,he is up by a million and a quarter votes even though he ranks third in OPS and 4th in WAR among NL third sackers. They have Jhonny Perlata leading by two million plus votes for SS though he trails the Giants Brandon Crawford in WAR, 3.6 to 2.4.

And they have Matt Holiday leading for the # 3 outfield position despite his unimpressive 0.9 WAR which is 23rd best among NL outfielders.

They have supported Molina for cathcher ( he is in second place in the voting behind Posey) even though Molina ranks 6th in WAR among NL catchers.

We probably will not be seeing Sonny Gray pitching in the All Star Game Tuesday. He took his regular rotation turn today. The club had said something about Gray maybe pitching Tuesday depending upon how far he went in today's game and how many pitches he threw.

Well, Gray just completed a nine inning two hit shutout of the Indians where he threw 107 pitches. The A's won 2-0, so it wasn't a game where they had the luxury of removing their best pitcher because the lead so was so huge.

Looks like Zach Greinke will start for the NL now since Scherzer pitched Sunday and therefore is ineligible

Tonight's HR Derby (which may get rained out) does not feature the premier home run hitters in baseball.

Participating will be: (HR total rank)
Albert Pujols (2nd)
Todd Frazier (5th)
Josh Donaldson (9th)
Joc pederson (12th)
Manny Machado (13th)
Anthony Rizzo (22nd)
Prince Fielder (34th)
Kris Bryant (52nd)

Not participating:
Giancarlo Stanton (1st)
Mike Trout (3rd)
Bryce Harper (4th)
J.D. Martinez ( 5th)
Nolan Arenaido (7th)
Nelson Cruz (tied 9th)
Paul Goldschmidt (tied 9th)

Just three of the top ten home run hitters will be represented in the competition.

The new Derby format is a welcome improvement. There is a much more heightened sense of competition by having them go head to head in a seeded tournament. Adding the time limits eliminates those times when a guy would take three or four pitches in a row.

Good move, MLB.

Not all the top stars in the HR derby but still stars nonetheless. Unlike the NBA slam dunk contest that features a bunch of no namers. It was nice to see a nice combination of older guys (Pujols & Fielder) and the younger guys like Pederson and Bryant.

Cincinnati done themselves proud in regards to their "Legends" in the pregame festivities. Well done!
