The Atlanta Braves are about to begin spring training for the 2017 season. Pitchers and catchers are reporting today. The full squad reports Friday, 17 February.

I hope the Braves have turned the page. I like some improvements with Brian Snitker as manager and Ron Washington joining his staff, and improvements on the roster with Bartolo Colón and R.A. Dickey in the starting rotation.

I would like to see if a change in scenery resurrects Jaime García's career.

I think the team legitimately should win 82 to 86 games, barring major injuries. The team really was very competitive after the acquisition of Matt Kemp and that was with a rotation that was basically a disaster outside of Julio Teheran. This year's rotation will be better, as Colon, Dickey and Garcia can't help but be better and more stable options than the journeyman and rookies that populated the rotation behind Teheran last year.

What will really be interesting is watching the development of the young guys, particularly the pitchers, as Colon and Dickey are both in their 40s and might not be with the team in 2018 and Garcia likewise will be a free agent at the end of the year. So, the team's rotation could be drastically different in 2018. Right now, it would look something like this:

Julio Teheran
Folty
?????
?????
?????

Those last 3 spots would theoretically be a battle between Wisler, Blair, Newcomb and any other younger starters that have stepped forward. Of course, Atlanta could always sign or trade for a starter, which I think is a highly likely next offseason.

Colón, Dickey, and García are filling needs in the starting rotation for the 2017 season. García and Blair need to prove they can pitch in the major leagues.

I love what the Braves are doing with these innings eating signings. I'm not sure you can slot one of the young guns to #2 or #3 in that rotation. That's a ton of pressure taken off of guys like Blair, Folty, Wisler or anyone else.

It sounds like SunTrust Park will be more hitter-friendly than Turner Field was. I hope it isn't too hitter-friendly considering all of the young pitchers that will be coming up over the next 2 or 3 years.

Default Game 1: Atlanta Braves @ New York Mets (2017-04-03 - 13:10)

Final: Mets 6, Braves 0

Teherán allowed four hits, allowed three bases on balls, and struck out six in six innings for no decision. Ian Krol (0-1), Chaz Roe, and Eric O'Flaherty combined for six earned runs in the seventh inning. Krol and O'Flaherty should have earned assignments to Rome (A, South Atlantic League).

No Brave wanted to hit balls for base hits and runs. Nick Markakis struck out three times and left five runners stranded on base. Freddie Freeman was missing in action.

Noah is brutal on all hitters.

Default Game 1 (2017-04-03 - 13:10): Atlanta Braves @ New York Mets

Snydergaard lasted for six innings before leaving with a blistered finger.
