Mike Trout to the DL for the first time in his career.
Torn thumb ligaments resulting from a head-first slide. Expected out 6-8 weeks following surgery
He's too fragile, the Angels should dump him.
Steve Garvey had some 1000 plus consecutive games played streak going in the '80's, and I recall it was breaking his thumb on a slide which finally brought it to an end.
Ryan Schimpf, Padres' third baseman, has a .166 batting average.
But, he's been a useful player, and hitter for them.
He has walked about 14% of the time, leaving him with a more respectable, but still below average, OBP of .297.
He hits for power though. He's an extreme fly ball hitter with almost two thirds of his batted balls being classified as flyballs. Fly balls are often caught by defenders, but also are caught by fans sitting in the bleachers (home runs) or fall in for extra base hits. He has 15 extra base hits, and just 10 singles this year.
All put together, he's been about a league average hitter.
Today, with the Marlins leading the visiting Phillies 10-2 with two outs and nobody on in the ninth, the Marlins pitching coach decided to pay the pitcher a visit. WHY?!!!

It worked, didn't it? Ellington then struck out Altherr, heading off that eight run rally which would have followed Altherr reaching base.
BTW...doesn't change the point you were making, but the leadoff hitter had a ground rule double, so there was a runner on second.

Why did the pitching coach try to coach his player?
The role of the pitching coach isn't just to go and ask his pitcher how he's doing and to calm him down when he's stressed out. He's tasked with getting the best performance out of the team's pitchers now and in the future. He might have seen something in the pitcher's delivery that was off. He might have wanted to discuss the pitcher's choice of pitches. They might have been working on some mental techniques. It could have been for any number of reasons.

Or maybe he just wanted to get on tv.
