And he's going to be set for a few years to come! It's a potential game-changer when we get to the end of '19 for the free agent market, but it could lead to other Astro players looking at possible extensions rather than go into free agency before their current contracts end, especially when the team wins. That, of course, will be up to the individual players.
The Boston Red Sox will top the major leagues at about $223 million, ending the Los Angeles Dodgers’ four-year run as the top spender. San Francisco will be second at around $203 million, and the Chicago Cubs are set to be third at about $183 million. (Oakland and ChiSox are the lowest payrolled team around $71 mil).
Angels outfielder Mike Trout is the highest-paid player for the first time at $34.08 million, which includes a $33.25 million salary and a prorated share of his signing bonus. Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw dropped to second at $34 million after leading the list for three straight years.
Arizona pitcher Zack Greinke fell one spot to third at $31.95 million, followed by a trio at $30 million: Philadelphia pitcher Jake Arrieta, Boston pitcher David Price and Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera.
The average salary is on track to be around the same as last year’s opening figure of $4.45 million, perhaps slightly higher.
And yet people STILL say the Yankees "buy" championships
Is it the Yankees fault the Marlins gave Stanton that ridiculously absurd contract that was so bad they were dying to get rid of it??
They're trying.
The New York Yankees are on track to open the season this week with baseball’s seventh-highest payroll, their lowest ranking since 1992, according to projections by The Associated Press.

Well, to the Yankees credit they have done a great job of rebuilding their farm and actually allowing their farm to help give them young, cheap talent. Of course, the Yankees' ability to take on a large contract without any real issues is what made them one of only a handful of teams that could really have ever taken on the Stanton contract. I imagine about the only teams that could have even considered taking on the Stanton contract financially would be the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Cubs, Rangers, Dodgers, Giants and maybe the Mets. So, basically 8 teams tops. The Yankees used their ability to take on the contract financially to lower the quality of the prospects that they would have to send to the Marlins.
Congrats on The Yankees not making the that list. For once.
Now how many billions have the Yankees spent FAILING to buy championships since 2001?
