They have not announced who the Giants are giving up in exchange for one year of McCutchen, but this deal seems to indicate that SF is thinking of being competitive in 2018. However it is another right handed hitter on the wrong side of 30 coming to a park which does not reward right handed power.
I'll hold further comment until we learn who the Giants sent to Pittsburgh.
Giants making moves...must be an even year! haha Anyhow, I'm surprised the Pirates are giving up McCuthen. He's been great for them and I assume well liked. Guess they want to get younger at this point.

Once the Pirates made the deal to trade Cole, the writing was on the wall for McCutchen. I xpect the Pirates to try to unload whatever other veterans they can: David Freese, Josh Harrison, Jordy Mercer, Ivan Nova and any other vets should all basically be available now.
The Giants plan seems to be to radiate the appearance of being competitive in 2018. They won 64 games in 2017 and would need to improve by 25 wins or more to have a shot at the wild card in 2018. Longoria and McCutchen do not constitute a 25 win improvement, more like five or six more wins. It is an old team, it is a team weighted down with contract commitments to guys who are no longer contributing much, it was a bad defensive team and it really needs to be torn down and rebuilt
Last year saw the end to San Francisco's long string of consecutive sellouts at AT&T. That may have triggered a panic in the front office and these name player signings represent their idea of a solution.
You got a good player and a great guy. At 31, he may be declining a little, but I expect the new scenery to give him a better outlook. The last two years with all the gutting the ownership did had to wear on him and everyone in the clubhouse. Next up is Harrison. Three years after a 98 win season, and we're back to being a farm club again. I'm only going to one game this year: May 11th, when the Giants come to town.
