Yea, I would like to see some polling data on the subject from the Native American community. I have heard many of them feel honored by sports teams using Indian referenced names.
One thing that surprised me was there was a poll taken of NFL players on the Redskins name, and 42 percent of the players wanted the name changed. Doubt there would be anywhere near that amount from MLB players.
Manfred statement calls for increasing "the culture" of diversity, not diversity itself. The "culture" of diversity would be that which includes all of the more recent PC adjustments.
Grandstander, hi.. fair enough, that's the spirit of my point, this move is solely about conspicuous virtue-signalling.
Removing Wahoo does nothing practical/meaningful to help diversify their league. MLB gives in to the ethnic-grievance industry, & then MLB congratulates themselves for being progressive. This is about control/capitulation over cultural symbols.
The (eventual) removal of all Indian imagery will actually reduce diversity of mascots. Trust, even monikers like Chief, which is Latin-Old French, not a Native American word, will be targeted/eradicated.
Most recent expansion pro teams just adopt generic animals or faceless people, (I assume) to avoid tangling with the obnoxious ethnic-grievance warriors... Jags, Carolina & Florida Panthers, Thrashers, the faceless Vegas Knight, a Houston Texan that is not a human being (bull's head), a Pelican.. etc. Even the Caucasian Pat the Patriot was erased back in the 9os.. Now the New England Patriot is silver. I guess to be a race-neutral tin man.
And incidentally what about people who may be offended by the letter C.. will their subjective feelings be considered by Cleveland & MLB brass (?) Why aren't they worthy of being included in the culture of diversity.
That a red-faced indian with a feather on its head might not really be appropriate anymore.
CB, You're post implies that an Indian with a feather is offensive/inappropriate. For my sake, could you illuminate the issue for me.. Indians do utilize feathers, no (?) Help me understand why a feather is offensive..
And if you're game, I have a second question. Are u offended by the Minnesota Viking (?) Is his depiction with his Scandinavian cultural symbols (ie- horned helmet, braided hair, etc). Is that offensive (?)
I submit that both Vikings & Indians are chosen as mascots out of reverence (for their warrior spirit), not ridicule.. I digress, await your response.
Glad they’re finally changing this — way past due.
And there was never anything flattering about the Indian portrayal in the Chief Wahoo logo — it has an exaggerated, derogatory quality similar to that of old fashioned Jim Crow era Black images.

Exaggerated? Sure, it's a caricature.
Derogatory? That's in the eyes of the beholders and the ones being caricatured, all with their own individual feelings on the matter. I've expressed mine.

On behalf of modern day pirates, I object to the stereotypical imagery employed by the Pittsburgh ML franchise and the NFL's Tampa Bay and Oakland. Eye patches, cutlasses, earrings, bats crossed like bones, none of this is part of modern pirate culture. As you can see below, modern, climate appropriate casual dress is the norm.
Rob Womanfred is a coward. Pandering to the white whiny liberals that tell these Native Americans that they should be offended. A sports with not even 10% of its players that are African American are trying to push diversity on us. Another reason to give up on sports
I am definitely am but I’m just saying they can replace it with the letter C
If you were an Indians fan you would know they have been slowly dropping Wahoo and going more with the C since the Clinton administration. All Star game was in Cleveland and Clinton wore a C cap to throw out the first pitch.
