You don't think the popularity of the game is decreasing? Is the younger generation watching the game - in 2-3 decades will the game still have the same following?
On what do you base the notion that the game is losing popularity, and further that young people are turned off by baseball? Note that I’ve seen people make the same complaint about pro football, too, citing everything from replay delays to players kneeling during the National Anthem. I’m going to have to be sold on the idea that it’s all true and not (for example) a straw man brought in to try and back up a personal pet peeve.
And what bondurant and JonasW said, too, come to think of it.

Never should have been expanded to 162, but 154 is an insignificant difference and amounts to about the same. But post season is insanely long, making us sit through nearly a month of 3-4 games a week to eliminate teams that didn't belong there in the first place.
Broadly, the answer is that MLB is motivated by pure greed, and absolutely nothing they do reflects an interest in the integrity of the game.
"Let's have a wild card tie-breaker when there is no tie. What time will the Brinks truck be here?"?
"In a perfect world, we'd start the season later and play a few scheduled doubleheaders going into an off day," he said. "As a fan you're going to a baseball game in April, and it's raining, snowing and [with] freezing rain. Is it really that much fun? That's my question."
The season definitely needs to be shortened! I would say by about 30 games. With 1/3 of the teams making the playoffs, a campaign with 162 contests is unnecessary and quite frankly remains in place because of $$$$. Then again, what does dinero not affect?
From a competition standpoint, the existing schedule is ridiculously long. More lousy Aprils like this year might start to change the tide.
