Among their areas of improvement has been their ability to defeat the teams in their own division. On June 11th they had a record of 10-21 against the AL West. Since that day they have gone 23-13 within the division.

I'm starting to think that Bob Melvin deserves, and probably will get, the AL Manager of the Year award. He's had a stable infield, but the rest of the team has been in flux all year. Melvin rebuilt the rotation on the fly and they came together to have a great August, but Mania and Anderson wet down and Melvin has been cleverly improvising with a a three man rotation and then gang bang games started by reliever Liam Hendricks who isn't expected to pitch past the second, and everyone else in the bullpen getting in sooner or later.

Melvin has boosted the scoring from the offense which posted a .738 OPS before the All Star break and .811 since. He has a power hitter in eight of the nine batting order slots.

Mike Fiers ran his record to 6-0 since coming from the Tigers, the A's have won 9 out of the ten games he has started. Fiers pitched six innings on 1 run ball and this time only three relievers were needed to close out a 3-2 win over Baltimore.

The ERAs of the A's pitchers tonight:
3.29
3.20
2.18
2.45

The ERAs of the Orioles' pitchers tonight:
4.90
5.79
5.94
5.67
4.50

I wasn't able to watch the start of tonight's A's -Orioles game, I turned it on in the top of the 4th hoping I hadn't missed too much.

It is 10-0 A's. 12 hits to Baltimore's 1. This is one of the A's no starter games where reliever Liam Hendricks goes two and is removed. Too bad, with this lead they could afford to leave a bad starter out there for a while.

The A's have the best club OPS in all MLB since June 1st, .791. Getting to bat against the Rangers, and now the Orioles staffs really helps fatten the number.

It wound up 10-0, the Rangers were held to one hit. Everything that happened took place in the third inning when the A's scored all of their runs.

They have moved to within a game and a half of ,NY for the #1 wild card slot. The Yankees are trailing the Twins in the 6th, 1-0. Also NY is getting no hit by Jake Odorizzi, but he has thrown 102 pitches through 6, so he may not be around at the finish, no hitter or not.

Update. The Yankees got two hits, but lost the game, so now Oakland is just one game back for the #1 wild card.

A 10th inning Kris Davis home run (ML leading 42nd) gave Oakland a hard fought 2-1 win over their closest pursuers, the Tampa Bay Rays. While the A's used a comparatively low number of pitchers (5), the Rays ran nine different guys out to the mound. They were effective, giving up just three hits to Oakland. Tampa Bay had six hits, but wasted half of them by getting two of them thrown out trying to steal, and another picked off first.

For the first time in years the A's have a magic number, after beating the Rays it is 7.

The A's came from behind to tie the game twice, but couldn't do it a third time and lost 7-5 to the Rays in MLB's first ever opener vs opener game. Both openers acquitted themselves well. Liam Hendricks for the A's and Ryne Stanek for the Rays both pitched scoreless first innings, and neither was asked to go any further. Both teams followed their openers with six relievers.

The big blow was Jake Bauers' three run homer in the 8th, this from a man batting .198 /.318 /.389.

The Yankees lost, but the Angels and Astros won, so when the smoke clears it is the A's 3.5 behind Houston for the division, 1.5 games behind NY for the # 1 wild card, 7.5 games ahead of Seattle for the second wild card and 8 games ahead of Tampa Bay.

90 wins is a great accomplishment for this young team, especially after losing their #1 starter. The future looks bright.

The A's turned a one sided beating into a contest with a ninth inning grand slam by Kris Davis, his ML leading 43rd homer. However, that was the end of the dramatics and the Rays won 5-4, taking the series.

The Astros won, so Oakland is shoved 4.5 games behind for the division. The Yankees lost so the A's remain 1.5 games behind them for the # 1 wild card. Seattle lost, so the A's still enjoy a 7 game lead for the # 2 wild card, it simply traded its closest pursuer from the Mariners to the Rays.

Default 90-60

3-3 road trip which has basically knocked them out of the divisional race for good. Won 2 of 3 in Baltimore, but really should be sweeping a team like the Orioles. With the Yankees off that day just having lost 2 of 3 in Minnesota and coming into that game just a game back of them, that was prime territory for them to jump to within a half game of the Yankees. Instead they lost to lose the half game and than matched the Yankees this weekend (won Friday night, lost Saturday and Sunday). Final home stand of the year starts on Tuesday, with 3 games against the Angels and 3 against the Twins who come in over the weekend, hopefully won't be the final time the A's play in Oakland for 2018.

Glad I'm not a Rays fan. My pet peeve is pitchers who simply can't get the ball over the plate. No excuse to even walk one guy much less the bases loaded with a 5 run lead in the ninth. You'd be better off to throw a slow fastball right down the pipe and give your defense a chance to make a play or give the batter a chance to make a mistake. Even in home run derbies they mi**** some of them for popups and grounders.
