Average runs scored in the 9th:
A's .64
Rays .62
Yankees .56
Red Sox .55
Indians .52
Astros .49
Rangers .46
Orioles .45
Blue Jays .45

The statisticians for the A's TV broadcast saved me the trouble of additional calculations. Last night they had a chart which showed that (at least going into last night's game) that Oakland leads the AL in run scoring in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings. Of the 499 runs the A's had scored, 203, 0r 41% of them, came in those three innings.

The leading candidates for the 2018 Rob Picciolo Award are shaping up. Victor Reyes of the Tigers has had 110 at bats and has avoided being walked save for once. Avisail Garcia of the White Sox has had 166 at bats and walked twice, a base on balls every 83 at bats. Among players qualified for the batting title, Dee Gordan heads the list with 385 at bats and just six walks.

For newcomers, the award is named for the immortal Rob Picciolo ('77 - '85, A's Brewers & Angels) who compiled 1628 career at bats while walking only 25 times for a lifetime OBA of .247. Picciolo managed to go two seasons, '83-'84, compiling 147 total at bats and not walking even once.

Lots of trades today

I'll talk about one

Dodgers get 2B Brian Dozier for Luke Raley, Devin Smeltzer and agreeing to take back Logan Forsythe's salary.

Raley is a big dude who hits the ball far.
Smeltzer is a back end starter or reliever.

DBacks get a few relievers - Ziegler and Diekman

Mariners get a CF in Cameron Maybin

The Pirates, curiously, get the top starter expected to be traded- Chris Archer
Also, curiously, the Rays trade for OF Tommy Pham
Less curiously, they trade C Wilson Ramos to the Phillies
AND they get international bonus pool money from the White Sox

Cubs get another reliever - Kintzler

Kevin Gausman and Darren O'Day to the Braves (this is a good move)

Brewers add IF Jonathan Scoop from Baltimore

Rather an odd move by the Rays, acquiring Tommy Pham for three minor leaguers. Pham came out of nowhere last season to hit impressively, but the guy was already 29 years old and now he is 30 and injured. If any season screamed "fluke" it was Pham's 2017. He began pro ball at 18 and in 12 seasons in the minors he batted .258/.342/.417. He has had his day in the sun. Why the Rays see any future in him puzzles me, but the Rays have been smart, so perhaps they know something I do not.

The Nationals amassed 26 hits and 8 walks and 5 home runs in massacring the Mets today, 25-4.

Unsurprisingly, when down 19-1, the Mets called upon Jose Reyes to take the mound. He was no Pablo Sandoval however, getting hammered for 6 runs on 6 hits, 2 walks and 2 home runs. Reyes now has a 54.00 ERA.

The A's completed a sweep of the Blue Jays while Houston beat the Mariners, both games were 8-3.

That puts the A's in a virtual tie with Seattle for the second wild card spot. The A's have gone 30-10 and closed an eleven game gap since June 15th.

The Mariners should be at best a few games over 500. The plus minus in runs is close to even for the Ms. Lucky as can be to still have the playoffs as a possibility.

Very odd sequence of moves for the Brewers this past week, and wondering where Counsell will give all this playing time too.

The Moustakas trade was a weird one seeing as they already had a pretty good third basemen (Travis Shaw) who hadn't played an inning in the middle infield, and with the prospects they gave up, they certainly didn't make that trade to make Moustakas a bench player/platoon guy. And than the Schoop trade?? If they had gotten Dylan Bundy or Mychael Givens with him it wouldn't be necessarily as bad, but they acquired ANOTHER infielder (how many infielders/corner outfielders do they have on their roster now?? 20??) when they needed pitching for the second year in a row and failed to deliver. Brewers are a clear loser at the deadline, while the Dodgers & Pirates won the deadline.
