During his time with the New York Mets he got involved with charities and founded the New York Police And Fire Widows and Childrens Benefit Fund. This was when he first joined the Mets in 1986.

He also founded the Rusty Staub Foundation to provide educational scholarships for youth and to fight hunger.

He gave back-and then some. Class defines Rusty Staub.
Yes, his commitment to learning some French endeared him to Montreal fans. And he did a lot of community work as well.

Definitely one of those folks who is described as a "great ----------- (fill in the career blank) but an even better person."

I remember whenever Davey Johnson was forced to play Rusty in the field (usually deep into extra innings) he would shift him back forth between left and right field depending on the hitter. He'd wear Rusty out doing that and inevitably the ball would come his way anyway. Dude sure could hit though. R.I.P.

John Gibbons, Manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, remembers Staub.

Torre, at a game I was at, sent him from first on hit and run twice. I spilled my soda. First ball fouled off, second single to RF, and Rusty barely beat the throw to 2nd.

But what a swing!

Great guy, too.

Easter 2018 would be his 74th bday.
